Naked Science - Birth of Life

How did life begin? its one of the most fundamental and difficult questions that has challenged us for ages. Our planet is teaming with life, from the highest mountain to the deepest ocean; life is everywhere. But what was the firing pistol that started the evolutionary race? How did material go from non-living to alive?

Palau - Paradise of the Pacific

Far to the east of India and Indonesia is a place where the sea hides a treasure of living riches - a secret corner of the ocean where ancient species still thrive in dazzling abundance, wildness and wonder. It sits alone at the edge of the vast Pacific Ocean, sheltered from time and the outside world. As lush as any paradise of our imagination, it is not one emerald island but an archipelago of more than two hundred, nearly all uninhabited. Along its submerged shoulders flourish some of the richest coral reefs remaining on Earth. In the reefs' shadows, life seeks shelter from the open water. This place is call Palau, a Living Eden where all is not what it seems - a home to a world of novelties concocted by nature unconstrained.

Bhutan - The Last Shangri-La

Here in a place an Eden where time stands still - where nature and religion have combined to turn a tiny Buddhist kingdom into the world's last Shangri-La. Locked between Tibet and India, Bhutan is the jewel of the Himalayas. To the north of the kingdom, towering virgin peaks rise to 25,000 feet. Beneath steep glacial walls, alpine highlands fall to misty forests. Mountain streams cut through gorges on their way down to warmer valleys and wide marshes in the heart of the kingdom. One distinct landscape drops to the next before finally descending to the jungles and grasslands of the southern plains. For the people who have adapted to this domain of extremes, Bhutan is a Living Eden where respect for life, in all its many incarnations, endures like the land itself.

years has completely changed our understanding of the fundamental nature of the
world we live in.

As we approach tipping points in both the economy and the climate, the film
examines the mathematics we have been reluctant to face up to and asks if, even

Railway Walks -Scotland

Julia Bradbury has her backpack on to explore the great outdoors. Her walks follow the old tracks, overgrown cuttings and ancient viaducts of Britain's lost rail empire, visiting disused lines across England, Scotland and Wales. Through stunning landscapes and urban backstreets, each contrasting walk has a unique story to tell, offering Julia a window into industrial Britain and how the rise and fall of the railways has altered lives and localities across the country.

Her first walking foray into Scotland has a very distinct flavour to it: whisky! The Speyside Way is one of Scotland's great walking routes, and between the villages of Craigellachie and Ballindalloch it follows the route of the railway that once served a remote area and a world-famous drinks industry.

Napoleon's Obsession: The Quest for Egypt

"Napoleon's Obsession: The Quest for Egypt" details the real facts behind a little-known account in Napoleon's illustrious military career. Those who do know of the French leader's invasion of Egypt, and the so-called Battle of the Pyramids, may have fallen victim to one of the best public relations campaigns in history. As we learn in this documentary, hosted by renown Egyptologist Bob Brier, Bonaparte's attempt to conquer Eqypt was nothing short of an exercise in vanity. By 1798, General Bonaparte was looking for new military challenges after conquering Europe. He turned his sights on the historical and symbolic wealth of Egypt and The East. Economical with everything except the lives of his men, Bonaparte was ill prepared for this invasion and marched his troops from Alexandria through 130-degree desert heat in woolen uniforms and with very little water. Napoleon had a few victories, including a melee against the defending Mamelukes of Cairo, which became know as the Battle of the Pyramids (in reality, it was fought in a melon patch, miles from the city). On the whole, the campaign was disastrous; the French Fleet had a nasty encounter with Admiral Nelson, and the troops were stranded in Egypt without reinforcements or supplies. Napoleon's reaction? He commissioned paintings of victories and wrote glowing letters. He even returned to France a hero after sneaking out of Egypt in the middle of the night, leaving his men behind, and not even informing his second in command. Thankfully, Brier reminds us several times throughout the production of the practical contributions Napoleon made from this ill-conceived campaign. To Egypt he brought several artists, scholars and scientists and established the Institut de l'Egypte. Their work and the soldiers' looting led to the discovery of the Rosetta stone and the birth of modern Egyptology. But while these contributions are impressive, Bonaparte's campaign in Egypt included horrible atrocities against Turkish civilians. Still, Brier's enthusiasm brings to life the many illustrations, some by Institut de l'Egypte's own Vivant Denon, which are combined with stunning footage of Egypt and the landscapes and sites along the French army's campaign road. In addition, crisp editing by James Marshall and concise direction by Peter Spry-Leverton make for an informative and handsomely packed hour of entertainment.

Charles Darwin Evolution’s Voice

He had to battle prejudice, ignorance and his own fear in his search for the truth. More than any other scientist, he changed mankind's view of the world and our place in it. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution stands as one of the most important discoveries in the history of science. Yet in his lifetime, Darwin was reluctant to reveal what he had learned for fear that it would make him and his family despised outcasts. He was right to worry; more than a century later, there are those who cannot accept his findings. At the time, they were viewed by many as heresy. From his historic voyage on the Beagle to his personal anguish over publicizing his findings, this is a fascinating profile of the life and times of the great naturalist. Excerpts from his journals detail his discoveries while leading scientists and scholars, including the author of Charles Darwin: Evolution of a Naturalist, shed light on his private life, public persona and monumental legacy.

National Geographic - The Living Edens:Namib - Africa Burning Shore

There is a 1200 mile strip of land off the southwestern coast of Africa where the searing Namibian desert meets the frigid Atlantic sea. Here the basic elements of the earth exist in paradoxical extremes. Namib, the hottest of lands, is obscured in mist created by the Benguela, one of the coldest of ocean currents. Fur seals and penguins divide their time between the sandy shore and the icy water of the sea, while elephant, ostrich, springbok, hyena roam the wind-swept dunes. Ingenious adaptations to this ancient desert's extreme heat allow these and other creatures to survive in an Eden called Namib.

National Geographic:The Living Edens -Denali - Alaska Great Wilderness

There is a place on Earth where an Alaskan wilderness spreads over more than six million acres like a living tapestry at the foot of the tallest peak in North America. Here, seasons of unfathomable extremes march beneath a mountain known as The Great One. In Denali's fierce winter, 20 hours of darkness and temperatures dipping nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit below zero are routine; in summer, 20 hours of sunlight. Grizzly bear, wolf, moose, ground squirrel and golden eagle have each found their own way to live in this sub-Arctic eco-system where life pulses in a series of harsh, dark winters, framed by the light of June and August. hunting industry. It's big business, attracting thousands of holiday hunters
annually. Keeping wild animals fenced in on farms has made it cheaper and

instead of endangering species, has actually increased animal numbers.

Staying at a safari hunting lodge, Louis hears that each kill has a price.
The potential shopping list is endless, ranging from $250 for a porcupine to
$100,000 for a rhino. It's a hunter's paradise.

This is a very popular tourist attraction – particularly among Americans.
Louis meets such visitors and tries to understand their motivation to kill
for pleasure, joining them as they go hunting.

He meets novice hunter Ann-Marie, who originally only came to accompany her
husband but gets caught up in the excitement and decides she wants to try to
hunt an animal herself. She tells Louis that, apparently, your first kill is
a total rush – although she would worry about killing a zebra as it's too
much like a horse.

Two of the local landowners, Piet Venter and Piet Warren, breed animals for
hunting and have a perhaps surprising sensitivity towards the animals
they've raised. They take particular care to try to ensure any animal is
killed swiftly so they suffer minimal trauma. Former vet Lolly Fourie, who
allows hunting on his land, explains how he no longer hunts as he gets no
pleasure from it nowadays.

Hearing their arguments in favour of the industry, Louis arranges to go on a
hunt of his own. Unsure if he really can pull the trigger, as he looks at a
wart-hog down the arrow of a crossbow he faces his beliefs head on and must
make the decision...

Discovery Channel - Africa's Super 7

The good, the bad and the ugly, the teacher, the lover, the fighter and the strong, silent type! Stars of a tense 24-hour drama with birth, death and everything in between."

On the northern bank of the Sand River in the Mala-Mala Game Reserve in South Africa, seven magnificent creatures reside in an area the size of Manhattan Island. Tracking them for 24 hours we reveal the invisible threads that bind them together in a never-ending daily drama. This action-packed film will show how seven individual stories become one, how the animals move in and out of one another’s lives in the course of a single day. Sometimes their encounters happen just by chance, at other times they are intent on stalking each other down. In all cases whenever they meet the encounter is always riveting.

Each animal has different strengths, even some weaknesses, but seeing them in action is always impressive. Tracking them through one day and one night we witness their dealings with the neighbours from hell, staking their territory, stalking the same prey, risking their lives and cautiously interacting with or avoiding each other. This is a privileged and rare glimpse into the complex lives of Africa’s Super Seven.

Each species has its own vital role to play in this unfolding 24-hour drama. There is no room for the weak and in the African bush there’s only one rule: the biggest, strongest, fastest and smartest survive.

As amazing as these animals are, they all have their Achilles heel too, and occasionally our story includes a fight for survival for them just like any other creature of the untamed African wild. For Africa’s Super Seven there are no free lunches. Some will pay the ultimate price and some will even be lunch. Not for the faint hearted, this is a story of power, trust, hunger, desperation and elation – an unforgettable adventure.

BBC - Prisoners Of Katrina

The shot of thousands of orange-clad prisoners, murderers and rapists among them, crouching on a broken bridge, held at bay, at gunpoint by a few overstretched guards, was one of the iconic images of the chaos that followed Hurricane Katrina. But who were those prisoners? ‘What about the prisoners in the jail?’ the Sheriff had been asked as city leaders ordered the people of New Orleans to flee the hurricane heading their way. “The prisoners will stay where they belong” he decided.

This is the untold story of almost 7,000 inmates, some never even charged, who found themselves in Orleans Parish Prison as it flooded. A year after the hurricane, find out what happened inside the jail as panicked inmates, left without food or water, rioted and broke out. Olenka Frenkiel reports on a justice system, already near to collapse - and on its final tipping point - Katrina.

BBC - Auschwitz The Nazis And The Final Solution

It is the site of the largest mass murder in the history of the world - Auschwitz. Yet few know the true and surprising history of this most infamous place, nor how it fitted into the Nazis' overall plan for the mass extermination of the Jews - what they called the 'Final Solution'. For Auschwitz, via its destructive dynamism, became both a microcosm of the Nazi State and the logical consequence of Hitler's warped worldview. Combining rare archive footage, CGI illustrations of the camp never before seen on television and dramatic reconstructions of the key decision-making moments, the story of Auschwitz and the horrific ideology behind it unfolds.

Tales of the Gun - Smith and Wesson

The history of Smith and Wesson is explored in this release from The History Channel that takes a look back at the gun manufacturers whose innovation paved the way for the Winchester Repeating Rifle and brought the cartridge six-shooter to the West in the days before the Colt Pacemaker became the weapon of choice. It was more than a century ago that Horace Smith and Daniel Baird Wesson's impressive catalog of firearms set the standard for quality in firearms, and in this release, period accounts, photographs, historians, and Smith and Wesson experts all come together for the sole purpose of detailing the development of the company from the Civil War to the holster of Dirty Harry himself. Demonstrations of original guns offer a detailed look at the efficiency of the early firearms, and a look at modern-day shooting competitions proves that the innovation of Smith and Wesson didn't go to the grave with the company's founders.

Discovery: Great Books - Great Expectations

This is what it’s like to be outside, looking in. Dickens used the story of a blacksmith’s boy who rises from the working class into a life of leisure to hold a mirror up to Victorian society and ask, what is it that really makes a gentleman? For once, the reaction of the British aristocracy was to grow a conscience. But, before such soul-refinement could occur, Dickens’ character had to pass from the largely unreported, dark world of lower-class Britain, far, far up to its dizzying - but not so enlightened - heights. Along the way, there is the pain of falling in love with the wrong person, the pleasure of having dreams come true, and the realization that no matter how far you run, you can never really escape your past. As the boy plays the remarkable hand life has dealt him, its hard not to wonder what any of us would do in his place, on the brink of destiny, just waiting to see what the future holds.

The Mexican-American War

The Mexican American War tells the still-controversial story of President James K. Polk's desire to expand U.S. territory to the Pacific Ocean. First offering to purchase the land from Mexico, Polk ultimately had to resort to war to achieve his goal. Knowing he had strong military superiority, Polk hoped the war would last only a few weeks but underestimated the passion of Mexicans to defend their country. It would take two years for Army Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott to bring Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to the bargaining table. And that only occurred when American forces occupied and controlled Mexico's capital, Mexico City.

We examine how the effects of globalisation, money laundering, corruption and even the subversion of governments are the consequences of a burgeoning criminal underbelly.

Dispatches - It Shouldn't Happen To A Muslim

Political commentator and journalist Peter Oborne investigates whether the 7/7 London Bombings attacks and the fear of terrorism has fuelled the rise of violence, intolerance and hatred against British Muslims.

He discovers that for many in the Muslim community, Britain is becoming a very frightening place. Dispatches meets a range of British Muslims who now live in daily fear, some because their homes are constantly vandalised, others because they or family have suffered devastatingly violent attacks.

In his first interview since leaving the Metropolitan Police, the man who headed anti-terror operations on 7/7 and afterwards, former assistant commissioner Andy Hayman talks about the poor relations between Muslims and the security services.

Breaking the Silence: Truth and Lies in the War on Terror

Award-winning journalist John Pilger investigates the discrepancies between American and British claims for the 'war on terror' and the facts on the ground as he finds them in Afghanistan and Washington, DC.

In 2001, as the bombs began to drop, George W. Bush promised Afghanistan "the generosity of America and its allies". Now, the familiar old warlords are regaining power, religious fundamentalism is renewing its grip and military skirmishes continue routinely. In "liberated" Afghanistan, America has its military base and pipeline access, while the people have the warlords who are, says one woman, "in many ways worse than the Taliban".

In Washington, Pilger conducts a series of remarkable interviews with William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, and leading Administration officials such as Douglas Feith, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, and John Bolton, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. These people, and the other architects of the Project for the New American Century, were dismissed as 'the crazies' by the first Bush Administration in the early 90s when they first presented their ideas for pre-emptive strikes and world domination.

Pilger also interviews presidential candidate General Wesley Clark, and former intelligence officers, all the while raising searching questions about the real motives for the 'war on terror'.

While President Bush refers to the US attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq as two 'great victories', Pilger asks the question - victories over whom, and for what purpose? Pilger describes Afghanistan as a country "more devastated than anything I have seen since Pol Pot's Cambodia". He finds that Al-Qaida has not been defeated and that the Taliban is re-emerging. And of the "victory" in Iraq, he asks: "Is this Bush's Vietnam?"

Thrilla in Manila 2009 HBO

THRILLA IN MANILA tells the previously unknown story of their final fight in the searing heat of the Philippines through the eyes of the "other man" in the ring - Frazier.

An Official Selection at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, THRILLA IN MANILA chronicles one of the bitterest sports face-offs ever, recounting a tale of personal betrayal that was stoked by the racial politics of 1970s America. Featuring archival footage and exclusive interviews with boxing insiders, including Ferdie Pacheco, Butch Lewis and Dave Wolf, as well as Imelda Marcos, former First Lady of the Philippines, the documentary tells the story of two great fighters forever linked by three epic bouts, and looks at their final fight, considered the most brutal, from Frazier's perspective for the first time.

Directed by John Dower ("Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of The New York Cosmos"), THRILLA IN MANILA deftly tracks an extraordinary personal battle between two friends, and captures the poignant moment in the socio-cultural history of the country when they became American sports icons and legends. While Ali was a symbol of the civil rights struggle and anti-Vietnam War movement, Frazier was cast as the symbol of the pro-war, conservative segment of American society, some would say unfairly.
In 1967, Ali was stripped of his heavyweight crown after refusing induction into the armed forces. The film reveals how Frazier subsequently befriended Ali and supported the renewal of his boxing license and status, showing the intense feelings of betrayal he felt after Ali returned to the ring in 1970 and subjected him to race-baiting attacks.

National Geographic - Australia’s Aborigines

Align Left

The Gagudju aborigines of northern Australia represent the longest unbroken culture in human history, having passed along their traditions for 40,000 years. Now, however, it seems the Gagudju are experiencing their final generation, as young members of the tribe have gone off to practice the ways of modern civilization. In this fascinating and often beautiful tape from National Geographic, tribal elders of the Gagudju display some of their rituals before they become lost to history. As the aborigines coexist closely with nature, the tape also features considerable footage of the exotic animals in the Kakadu National Park, home to the tribe. The aborigines have hunted the vicious saltwater crocodile, and have passed along many legends about the birds and lizards found in this amazing environment. One young aborigine, the son of a tribal elder, works today as a park ranger at Kakadu, and the tape follows his efforts to reconcile the traditions of his ancestors with his life in modern society. As one would expect from National Geographic, this tape features astonishing nature photography as well as solidly researched material on the Gagudju people. The scenes of the elders trying to pass on their lore are touching, as is the mention that one elder often cries at night because he realizes he is the last of his people, as the younger generation no longer undergoes the initiation rituals. This tape would be worthwhile for the gorgeous photography alone, but it is also an intelligent last look at a vanishing culture. –Robert J. McNamara

BBC - The Sun

Unreachable, unimaginably hot and yet ever present. The sun is the source of all life on earth. It’s little wonder many cultures still revere it as a deity. For 4.5 billion years the sun rises every morning on the horizon. The sun is the center of our universe and our calendar. The life-giver brightens our sky, provides us with light, warmth and nourishment. Yet the star itself is a very inhospitable place. At a surface temperature of 5.700 degree Celsius we have to be grateful that the sun is 150 million kilometers away from earth. But even at this distance it influences our lives more than we often care to imagine. Even in the age of electrical light the change from day to night remains obvious.

The activities of sunspots and cosmic weather often remain hidden to humans. Yet Galileo Galilei already documented the motion of the darker, colder spots on the surface of the sun. But their meaning was only discovered much later.

SiCKO -Michael Moore

The words "health care" and "comedy" aren't usually found in the same sentence, but in Academy Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore's new movie 'SiCKO,' they go together hand in (rubber) glove.

Opening with profiles of several ordinary Americans whose lives have been disrupted, shattered, and—in some cases—ended by health care catastrophe, the film makes clear that the crisis doesn't only affect the 47 million uninsured citizens—millions of others who dutifully pay their premiums often get strangled by bureaucratic red tape as well.

After detailing just how the system got into such a mess (the short answer: profits and Nixon), we are whisked around the world, visiting countries including Canada, Great Britain and France, where all citizens receive free medical benefits. Finally, Moore gathers a group of 9/11 heroes – rescue workers now suffering from debilitating illnesses who have been denied medical attention in the US. He takes them to a most expected place, and in addition to finally receiving care, they also engage in some unexpected diplomacy.

While Moore's 'SiCKO' follows the trailblazing path of previous hit films, the Oscar-winning BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE and all-time box-office documentary champ FAHRENHEIT 9/11, it is also something very different for Michael Moore. 'SiCKO' is a straight-from-the-heart portrait of the crazy and sometimes cruel U.S. health care system, told from the vantage of everyday people faced with extraordinary and bizarre challenges in their quest for basic health coverage.

In the tradition of Mark Twain or Will Rogers, 'SiCKO' uses humor to tell these compelling stories, leading the audience conclude that an alternative system is the only possible answer.

Kamikaze in Color

Kamikaze in Color provides a balanced presentation of the ten-month
history of kamikaze operations starting in the Philippines in October
1944. The documentary has eight chapters that cover topics such as
the battles at Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. In addition, the
DVD has about 80 minutes of special features divided into four sections: U.S. newsreels, Japanese newsreels, color bonus footage, and excerpts from Japanese movies.
These special features have no introduction or commentary, and most
have little or no connection to kamikaze operations. The two
highlights of these special features are a Japanese newsreel showing
the farewell of the five pilots in the Shikishima Unit, who made the
first official kamikaze attacks, and a 90-second wartime American
newsreel about kamikaze attacks on the carrier Ticonderoga and the
battleship Nevada.

WWI-Death of Glory

This shows how the epic struggle had a more profound effect on civilization, than any other war in history. New countries had to be built on the ruins of a continent. It was the end of kings, empires and innocence, and the beginning of weapons like the U-boat, the machine gun, the tank and poison gas. Graphic footage captures the horrors of trench warfare in battles like Verdun, where over one million men died. Riveting commentary from leading experts details the awesome effects of new technology on the battlefield, and the revolutionary changes that the end of the war brought including the near-inevitable rebirth of Germany as a military force to be reckoned with in World War II.

New World Order

Got about seven hours you want to spend wrapped up reading stuff on the internet? If so, google search some of the following: “Bilderberg Group,” “WTC Building 7,” “911+ truth” and then top it all off by going to Alex Jones’s conspiracy wonderland, Info Wars. In that seven hours (or more) you spend reading about vast conspiracies, mostly centered on the impending “New World Order,” one of two things will likely happen. You’ll either shake your head in amazement at how some people can be so insane, paranoid and obsessed or, you’ll see that there are some pretty damned convincing arguments to be found about where our country is headed as well as the events surrounding the 9-11 attacks. Documentary filmmakers Luke Myer and Andrew Neel’s “New World Order” take us into the world of the “conspiracy theorists” in their outstanding new film, “New World Order.”

A Zen Life - D.T. Suzuki

Daisetsu Suzuki was a pivotal figure in bringing Zen to the West.

As well as being a charismatic speaker, he was a prolific translator of Chinese, Japanese, and Sanskrit literature. He also wrote many original works, notably the three volume, Essays in Zen Buddhism; Studies in Zen Buddhism and Manual of Zen Buddhism. His, An Introduction to Zen Buddhism, includes a commentary by Carl Jung.

But despite his prolific literary output, he always stressed the importance of actually experiencing satori.

The film follows the progress of his life and thought and many fascinating insights into his character are offered by those who knew him well.

Synopsis:
Opening:
The video starts with a very brief introduction to Zen and to DT Suzuki.

History:
A three minute overview of significant world events during Dr. Suzuki’s lifetime of 96 years, concentrating on the many wars which took place in the 20th Century

Life Story:
A flowing, in-depth treatment of the life of Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki, with numerous photographs and rare film footage.

Thematic Segments:
Threaded in and out of the LIFE STORY are rare recordings of D.T. Suzuki himself, as well as numerous interviews of people who knew him in person, inspiring in their own right.

Sartori (Enlightenment):
Daisetz Suzuki attracted many Westerners to Zen Buddhism, and mystified many with his historical stories of Satori. He did not feel Zazen meditation was necessary to attain “enlightenment” - though it is a useful device in modern times.

Some claim he overemphasized the Satori experience. As we will see, this indescribable enlightenment is not a sublime “state” of being, but a “way” of being truly free.

East & West :
D.T. Suzuki excelled at explaining Eastern concepts and ways of thinking to Western intellectuals. He felt that Westerners, who view reality based on dichotomy and opposition, should learn from the East, where there is no “duality.”

Christianity & Buddhism:
Suzuki had a universal image of human beings. He was especially fond of the writings of Meister Eckhart. Fr. Thomas Merton and he greatly admired one another.

Suzuki found common ground in Western tradition, and thanks to him, so too has the West been drawn to Eastern thought and practices. Now there are many Christians, including priests and nuns, who do Zazen.

Zen & Shin Buddhism (”Self power” & “Other Power”):
Zen insists there is no almighty - you must understand the ultimate yourself and live life fully. Shin (Pure Land) Buddhism, like Christianity, believes you must look to a higher power to be “saved.” Suzuki realized that these seemingly contradictory ways of thinking are actually one and the same.

Zen: Religion or Philosophy:
There never was need for a word like “religion” in Japanese, until translation of the Western concept was needed. For Suzuki, both the intellect and the spirit are aspects of human expression. He was a lay Buddhist, and some Zen priests think he was too intellectual. Academics may claim he was too spiritual. The fact is he was widely respected by theologians and agnostics, intellectuals and plain folk alike.

Zen & Psychoanalysis:
It is interesting to note that both psychoanalysis and Zen became popular in the West around the same time. Indeed, leading psychoanalysts were strongly attracted by Zen thinking, mainly through Suzuki’s influence, and its way of dealing with the “self” and the unconscious

Zen & the Arts (Freedom within Limitations):
The end product of Zen is freedom of the spirit, which is the very basis of creativity. Dr. Suzuki’s writings and teaching had a ripple effect throughout Western culture, and strongly influenced contemporary Western artists such as John Cage and Gary Snyder.

Life & Death:
One of the most difficult concepts to comprehend in Zen is that life and death are one and the same. Western philosophers from ancient times have grappled with the same problem. If you live the absolute moment, there is neither life nor death. As Suzuki explained it, the question is not “to be or not to be.” It is “to be and not to be.”

PBS Nova: World in the Balance: The Population Paradox

It took all of human history until 1800 for the world’s population to reach its first billion. Now we add a new billion nearly every dozen years. Over the next half century, 98 percent of that growth will take place in our planet’s poorest regions. And as the global total swells to nearly 9 billion by 2050, the social and environmental strains will be enormous.

Through vivid personal stories, The People Paradox reveals many startling trends. In Japan, Europe and Russia, birth rates are shrinking and the population is aging. But in parts of India and Africa, more than half of the still growing population is under 25. The surprising conclusion: world population is now careening in two dramatically different directions.

The second hour, China Revs Up, is an insider’s look at China’s booming economy and its growing impact on the environment. What will happen as China follows America’s affluent lifestyle and begins to rival the U.S. as the world’s biggest polluter?

In this groundbreaking, worldwide investigation of humanity’s future, NOVA shows how decisions made now will change the fate of everyone over the next fifty years.

Arctic Tale

This heartbreaking documentary puts a face on the sad statistics of global warming–and though it’s not a human face, it’s the perhaps even more effective face of an adorable polar bear cub, Nanu, along with her mother, her brother, and her natural enemy, the equally heart-melting Seela the walrus. With breathtaking footage of life on the arctic tundra, the directors spin a highly emotional tale of the melting ice caps and the effect of their disappearance on every species in the ecosystem. Since the film is essentially aimed at children, the cuteness factor is off the charts, aided by the slightly grating use of sound effects, a slangy voiceover by Queen Latifah, and a kid-friendly pop/folk soundtrack. And, as in a National Geographic special, viewers learn some interesting and neutral facts about polar bears, walruses, narwhals, foxes, and other northern creatures. The narrative, however, returns repeatedly to the grim conditions that are killing off our planet’s wildlife, one family at a time. The directors take pains to create a hopeful ending, with a sweet pair of life-goes-on epilogues and a closing credit sequence featuring conservation tips, but the message of the film is sobering and hits its mark with kids and adults alike.

National Geographic - Is It Real? - Stigmata

Gouged by a crown of thorns, nailed to a cross, and stabbed with a spear. It’s the most famous execution in history, but could the wounds Jesus received during his last hours miraculously reappear in a select few among us? Are the marks of stigmata the divine manifestation of Christ’s wounds? Could the faith of these believers be so intense that they are somehow inducing wounds psychologically? Should this ‘divine malady’ be summed up with one word? Is it just fraud?

Africa’s Forgotten Kingdom

In the heart of southern Africa stands the remains of a once mighty city, Great Zimbabwe. For hundreds of years a mysterious civilization reigned supreme here on the Zimbabwe plateau. Then suddenly, in the 16th century, it crumbled, leaving behind only a riddle: Who had built these massive walls? Obsessed with legends of a lost white civilization, a German explorer stumbled upon the ruins. Was this the legendary city of Sheba, he thought, whose queen captured the heart of King Solomon? Fifty years later, an archaeologist in her quest for the truth unearthed an even more remarkable past. Had Great Zimbabwe been the center of a powerful black culture, one of the greatest cities of its time? This idea sparked furious debate and was responsible for overturning centuries of bias about Africans and their history.

Inside the Saudi Kingdom

1

Through unique access to one of the most senior Royal Princes in the Kingdom, this film paints a portrait of modern Saudi Arabia at a crossroads. As it wrestles with modernisation and digital technology, can it maintain its Bedouin and Islamic traditions? Decadent princes, sand dunes and harems… these were once the typical images that Saudi Arabia evoked. But post 9/11, those cliches have been replaced by fears of a country funding fundamentalist Madrassi schools worldwide, breeding suicide bombers and not allowing its women to vote or drive. The new King Abdullah has embarked on a cautious program of reform to counter what some Western commentators see as a monarchy out of touch with its people. But what is it really like for those living in modern day Saudi Arabia? In this exclusive film, Prince Saud bin Abdul Mohsen - the Governor of Hail Province - talks candidly about its ambitions and problems and we speak to the ordinary people of his province. From their stories emerges a fascinating insight into a once secretive and feudal country, steeped in an aristocratic tradition, at a time of great change.

PBS NOVA: Last Extinction

In May 2008, a scientific team made worldwide headlines by announcing evidence of a previously unsuspected impact from space that had devastated prehistoric North America at the end of the last Ice Age. According to this controversial new claim, the extinction of more than 34 types of large prehistoric animals (or “megafauna”) was caused not by climate change or the arrival of the first human hunters, but by the massive breakup of a comet over the Great Lakes region. NOVA explores this provocative new theory about what killed off America’s mammoths and may have come close to extinguishing early human populations as well.

Science and Islam - The Language of Science

Episode 1. The Language Of Science

Physicist Jim Al-Khalili travels through Syria, Iran, Tunisia and Spain to tell the story of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries.

Its legacy is tangible, with terms like algebra, algorithm and alkali all being Arabic in origin and at the very heart of modern science - there would be no modern mathematics or physics without algebra, no computers without algorithms and no chemistry without alkalis.

For Baghdad-born Al-Khalili this is also a personal journey and on his travels he uncovers a diverse and outward-looking culture, fascinated by learning and obsessed with science. From the great mathematician Al-Khwarizmi, who did much to establish the mathematical tradition we now know as algebra, to Ibn Sina, a pioneer of early medicine whose Canon of Medicine was still in use as recently as the 19th century, he pieces together a remarkable story of the often-overlooked achievements of the early medieval Islamic scientists.

PBS Nova - The Deadliest Plane Crash

On March 27, 1977, on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, two fully loaded 747 jumbo jets collided on a fogbound runway, killing 583 people in what is still the deadliest crash in aviation history.

At the time, the facts of the accident were shocking and inexplicable. In the fog, a KLM 747 began an unauthorized takeoff, slamming into a Pan Am 747 that was taxiing on the same runway. The best and the brightest pilots, including KLM’s senior captain and head of safety, were at the helm. What could have triggered the accident? NOVA looks back at the crucial final hours before the disaster, when an improbable chain of coincidences, bad luck, and misjudgments snowballed into tragedy.

The Deadliest Crash features realistic recreations, interviews with accident investigators, and moving testimony from the few survivors of the disaster. NOVA’s gripping examination also points to the crash’s continuing relevance for today. Despite new technology to improve runway safety, near-misses on the ground are still the leading cause of deadly aviation accidents.

Special DVD features include: materials and activities for educators; a link to the NOVA Web site; scene selections; closed captions; and described video for the visually impaired.

The Mysterious Origins of Man

Join us as we examine controversial theories about man's origins and evolution, new findings about Egypt, the pyramids and the Sphinx, archaeological cover-ups involving ancient maps, dinosaurs and megalithic structures in Peru.

Is the Sphinx thousands of years older than history tells us? Will the answer be found by a similar Sphinx-like face photographed by NASA on Mars?

Does the essence of a simple flower have the ability to help cancer patients heal? Curious minds can explore these and other sujects that are reshaping our world.

In February of 1996, NBC broadcast the controversial one-hour special, The Mysterious Origins of Man. In this program, many alternative views of man's origins were presented, revealing that there are still many unanswered questions. The reaction of the scientific community was extreme and continues to this day.

*Created by the producers of NBC's Emmy Award winning "THE MYSTERY OF THE SPHINX".

According to the current view there was no contact between the Old World and the New World before Columbus. Yet numerous artifacts have been found that suggest a link between Egypt and the Americas.

Consider these similaritles:

- Both have huge pyramids, aligned to the cardinal points.
- Temples with megalithic stones with extremely fine joints of less than a fiftieth of an inch.
- Both Egypt and the Americas used royal headresses of similar style.
- Both employed a unique style of construction using "L" shaped corners.
- Both use the same style of metal clamps to hold the huge stones in place.
- And both cultures used the process of mummification to preserve and honor their dead.

These compelling similarities suggest to some that both ancient cultures were influenced by a sophisticated common source. Was that source Atlantis?

Stratographic Column

As a rule, modern artifacts, like this clay pot, are found near the top of the stratographic column.

Homo Sapiens (modern man) is thought to have originated in Africa 100,000 years ago.

Neanderthal Man originated around 150,000 years ago.

Homo Erectus originated around 1.5 million years ago.

Australopithicus, the first to walk upright. Around 5 million years ago.

Pliopithicus, an ape-like being, was amoung man's earliest relatives, around 25 million years ago.

This primitive hand-ax is the most advanced tool we would expect to find in 2 million year old strata.

We are now in the forbidden zone of archeology. This mortar and pestle was found in rock strata 55 million years old. At this early period in earth's history human beings did not exist.

This metallic tube is impossible according to the accepted views of archeology. Found in chalk beds dated to 65 million years, it is of obvious intelligent design, yet dates to a time before humans existed.

This artifact has never been recorded in a college textbook. Modern human bones were found in an Illinois coal deposit dated at 320 million years. Does this mean that man lived at the time of the dinosaurs?

Perhaps the oldest artifacts ever discovered are these metallic spheres found in Klerksdorp, So. Africa. Over 150 of the mysterious balls were found deep in Pre-Cambrian strata dated at an astounding 2.8 billion years old. At this time in earth's history, only simple forms of algae were thought to exist.

PRODUCERS' RESPONSE TO THE CRITICS:

As we expected, the response to our show has been heated. Many viewers praised the production "for raising the question in public, even if the scientfic community does not believe it..." On the other hand we've been accused of pseudo-science and setting back the course of education in America. But our goal was simply to present the public with evidence which suggests an alternative view to some of our most accepted theories. After all, the theory of evolution is still a theory, not a fact, and therefore alternative views should be welcomed, not banned.

Probably the most common criticism is that the show gave no opposing view from the academic community. The producers' position is that the accepted view has been so frequently presented to the public that only a brief summary by the host was necessary. It was more valuable to focus on the documented anomalous evidence.

For example, if man evolved from the apes around 5 million years ago, then how does the scientific community explain tools of modern man found in rock strata dating to 55 million years old? (J.D Whitney, California State Geologist, Table Mt. Mine) Those artifacts currently reside in a museum in Berkeley, California. When we applied for permission to film them, we were denied by the museum.

Another criticism is that the information in our show is presented by experts who do not hold degrees in their fields of expertise and therefore their opinions are not endorsed by the scientific community. But Dr. Virginia Steen McIntyre holds a PhD in Geology and was a fellow with the USGS when she did her field work in Mexico. Her conclusions about the age of the spearpoints she dated (250,000 years BP) were backed by two other USGS members, yet because of their implications, the findings were ignored and her career was ruined.

In the case of the Paluxy River man tracks, to our knowledge, no accredited archaeologist has ever proven the prints to be fake. Furthermore, many scientists have referred us to an article written by Kuban and Hastings who seem to be the experts on this site. They categorically deny that there is any validity to the prints and claim that the case has been solved.

It is interesting to note that the scientific community refers to this report as if it is definitive proof, when in fact neither gentleman is an accredited archaeologist, anthropologist or paleontologist. If this is to be a fair discussion let's all play by the same rules.

Many of our critics are using very strong language, calling us morons, liars, and subversive creationists. These are emotional responses, not logical arguments. To set the record straight, we are not creationists or affiliated with any group whatsoever. We are being attacked on a personal level, because we are questioning issues that have been deemed too fundamental to be questioned.

We are fully aware that the information presented is highly controversial. This was re-iterated by Charlton Heston in the show, "We've seen a broad range of evidence, some of it highly speculative. But there are enough well documented cases to call for a closer look at the conventional explanation of man's origins."

We never take the stance that we know the answers or in any way suggest that we will provide them. We are merely offering an alternative hypothesis. In this way, we feel that the American public is fully capable of making up its own mind.

National Geographic-White Wolf

On Canada's Ellesmere Island, on the tundra 500 miles south of the North Pole, award-winning photographer Jim Brandenburg and biologist David Mech gain the confidence of a pack of arctic wolves and are allowed to spend the summer months filming their behavioral patterns. Released in 1988, this video still stands as remarkable documentation of humankind's first interaction with the isolated white wolf. Never persecuted or hunted by humans, they are more tolerant than other wolves to their human observers. In fact, Brandenburg astonishingly goes into a cave where a mother white wolf is raising her pups and, after several failed attempts, even follows the pack on a hunt. Brandenburg and Mech return for two summers, and their observations reflect a dramatic change in the social structure of the pack. --Cristina Del Sesto

Journey to the snow-covered slopes of Canada's Ellesmere Island to observe a remarkable pack of white arctic wolves. Shielded by their remote and inhospitable climate, these wild animals have not yet learned to fear man. Taking advantage of this rare opportunity, an award-winning photographer and veteran biologist team up to achieve scientific and cinematic history by producing WHITE WOLF, the most intimate film about wolf behavior ever made.

BBC - The Secret History of Genghis Khan

Stampeding horses, missing money and burning vodka - it’s all in a day’s work when you are shooting the life and times of Genghis Khan, writes Timewatch director Heinz Leger.

‘It’s all real and without cheap tricks,’ said Heinz Leger, director for the Austrian broadcaster ORF, who filmed the drama for ‘Timewatch: The Secret History of Genghis Khan’.

‘I avoided any of the computer animation that is so en vogue. Even in the mass scenes each horseman is flesh and blood. I was not so much concerned with the precise sequence of battles and conquests, but more with the personal development of the man, Genghis Khan.’

The programme is based on ‘The Secret History of the Mongols’, a manuscript written in the 13th century, some believe by the adopted son of the great Khan.

The Secret History of the Mongols, said to have been written by Genghis Khan’s adopted son, reveals a very different man to the brutal butcher of Western legend. Not just a womanizer, but a devoted husband. Not just a warrior, but a politician. Not just a conqueror, but a legislator. A man who wanted the lessons he had learned – good and bad - to be passed on to his successors. Within its pages lies the ‘inside story’ of how an illiterate nomad inspired his successors to conquer the largest land empire the world had ever seen.

This program tells the story of this equally famous, notorious and enigmatic figure from new perspectives, through the eyes of his own people, past and present, as well as those of his enemies. We watch how the conqueror’s rapid transformation into a shrewd statesman and ruler, turned a military machine into a political meritocracy. From his orphaned childhood in poverty to the valley of the Onon River to his secret burial we follow the life of Genghis Khan. It is an ancient story with a modern search for its traces.

Israel, Birth of a Nation

Israel declared its sovereignty on May 14, 1948. One day later, armies from Lebanon, Syria, Transjordan, Egypt and Iraq invaded. With only 600,000 people in the infant nation, the odds seemed overwhelming. Yet they not only survived, they triumphed, and by 1949 armistice negotiations began that would ensure the existence of the Jewish State. Sir Martin Gilbert, author of over sixty books and the host of A&E's JERUSALEM, hosts this gripping account of Israel's difficult first years. Filled with rare footage, photographs, and interviews with participants in the War of Independence, this is the definitive document of one of the turning points in modern history. Extraordinary footage filmed by Bernard Beecham, a British soldier, shows the reality of life in the fledgling nation, when all efforts were devoted toward winning the war. Celebrating Israel's 50th anniversary, this is a remarkable chronicle of a nation won by courage and determination more than weaponry, the saga of a people finally returned to the land from which they had sprung.

National Geographic-Okavango: Africa's Wild Oasis

While most think an oasis in the desert is at best a mirage, this is not always so, as is the case of the jewel of the great African Kalahari Desert, Okavango. This nourishing delta, the largest within the borders of the Dark Continent, is the lifeblood for thousands of weary animals making the trek across the unforgiving sun-baked lands of Zimbabwe. Brought to video by National Geographic, this tape refreshes the minds of the viewer with an educational and visually stunning look at the natural watering hole that supports the nomadic wildlife of the surrounding Northern Botswana region. ~ C. Synesthesia: When Senses Collide

Imagine if every time you saw someone called Derek you got a strong taste of earwax in your mouth. It happens to James Wannerton, who runs a pub. Derek is one of his regulars. Another regular's name gives him the taste of wet diapers. For some puzzling reason, James's sense of sound and taste are intermingled.

"One of my earliest memories was being at school, listening to the Lord's Prayer and getting flavor after flavor coming in. It was mostly bacon. It wasn't unpleasant. "For me," Wannerton said, "nearly everything has a flavor, including countries. You'll be happy to know that the United States tastes like Starbursts. This room, however, tastes distinctly of mashed carrots. I have no idea why."

Julian Asher can hear colors. Others can taste shapes, smell sounds, feel smells. It's called synesthesia, a truly bizarre condition in which our senses become intermingled, and has baffled scientists for decades.

While academics debate the cause of synesthesia - whether its roots lie in the physiology of the mind or the chemistry of it - one thing is certain: It's all about connections. Connections between sensations, connections between brain regions and, perhaps most importantly, connections between individuals.

Billy Connolly's World Tour of New Zealand is the fourth of Billy Connolly's decade-spanning ‘world tours’ that follow the comedian on his various travels across the globe. In this tour, filmed in 2004, Connolly visited New Zealand and travelled 8,500 km throughout the country, from Stewart Island/Rakiura in the south to Ninety Mile Beach in the north. As he did on his 1996 tour of Australia, Connolly travelled on a custom-made Harley-Davidson trike. The series was made up of eight episodes in which Connolly gave insights into the history and culture of the country, especially its Māori heritage, while also giving highlights from the New Zealand leg of his Too Old to Die Young tour.

National Geographic Gabon the Last Eden

TinyFotos.com

Gabon is an unlikely Eden where relentless predators stalk prey in lush forests and primates, who have not yet learned to fear man, live right alongside forest elephants. Against all odds, one visionary African leader and a group of dedicated scientists defied the conventional wisdom that insists oil and logging are the only way to bring prosperity to an impoverished land. Out of the wild they created 13 new national parks—and are now developing an eco-tourism industry to sustain them. Gabon: The Last Eden tells this amazing story with stunning footage— silverback gorillas defending territory, mandrill baboons’ faces splashed with day-glow color, and hippos wallowing in the ocean—exploring one of the planet’s last true wildernesses and what is being done to save it.

PBS Nova: Volcano Under the City

A team of scientists clambers down into the steep crater of an active volcano in central Africa, a lake of molten lava seething far below. The team’s mission is to explore this deadly mountain up close to find out when and why it is likely to erupt next. The lives of half a million people living directly in its shadow are at stake.

In January 2002, the ground close to the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo split open and rivers of lava swept through entire neighborhoods, killing some 100 people and leaving 120,000 homeless. The volcano towering over the city, Mount Nyirangongo, had awoken again. Now French volcanologist Jacques Durieux and his team worry that, next time, deadly lava could erupt from cracks directly under the city itself.

Volcano Under the City reaches a stunning climax as Durieux’s team struggles to capture a sample of furiously boiling lava from the heart of the volcano. The crater walls crumble and Mount Nyirangongo belches poisonous gas as the scientists put their lives on the line to retrieve their vital data. .

PBS Nova - Everest: The Death Zone

Get ready for a (literally) breathtaking trek up Mt. Everest, from Base Camp at 17,600 feet; through the chilling, corpse-strewn Death Zone; to the very pinnacle of the the Earth, five and a half miles above sea level. For those brave souls who survive the harrowing climb to the top of the world, it is a transformative experience. But can the excruciating ascent—through frigid cold, blasting wind, blinding sun, and severe lack of oxygen—cause permanent, damaging changes to the human brain and body?

In the wake of the 1996 disaster that took eight climbers in a single day, scientists follow a team of hikers to measure, for the first time ever, the toll high-altitude climbing takes on the heart, lungs, blood, and brain. Why do seemingly rational people make poor, sometimes fatal decisions as they approach the peak? And the danger doesn’t end there—as NOVA discovers during the descent, when one climber’s respiratory illness takes a terrifying turn on the isolated mountainside. ”Even with the best technology, the best training,” says team member, producer and director David Breashears, ”you can still end up frozen to death at 27,500 feet. That’s what makes Everest Everest.”

PBS Nova: Top Gun Over Moscow

Nova visits Russia for Nova: Top Gun Over Moscow, a thorough look at the sleekest and most powerful Russian jets. In a word, they are tough. These jets are engineered quite differently from their American counterparts. They function well in adverse conditions, able to take off from open dirt fields, and their continuous operation doesn’t depend on regular maintenance. The U.S. jet is finely tuned, requiring more frequent upkeep, but definitely having a high-tech edge, particularly in the areas of radar and missile guidance. Interviews with pilots reveal a very different outlook between the two countries on training goals. ~ Alice Day, All Movie Guide

PBS Nova: The Unknown World

They’re hiding in your closet. They’re lurking in your bed. They’re all over you- snacking on your skin, burrowing through your scalp, munching on your mascara. They’re the creepy crawlers of the unknown world, and now- thanks to micro-photographer Lennart Nilsson, who brought us The Miracle of Life- you can (shudder) catch these critters in the act, magnified to monster size. Look quick, on the bookshelf- a giant silverfish is slithering over your Shakespeare. Peer into the house plant- a mammoth ladybug stalks an aphid for a feast. Grab your coat- and hope it’s not teeming with ravenous larvae. Then glance in the mirror: are those sci-fi creatures you see- swarming through the rainforest of your hair, the jungle of your arm, the furrowed contours of your hand? Change your perspective (if you dare). Spy from an unexpected angle- say, a behind-the-teeth view- and a kiss is not just a kiss anymore. Zoom in again: a secret drama is taking place, in, on, and around us in a hidden world. And yes, we’re all in it together- whether we know it or not.

Unlocking The Mystery Of Life: Introduction on Intelligent Design Theory

The debate on the reason for the Origins of Life continues. Since the Beginning of the 90’s, advocates of creationism started a new movement: Intelligent Design Theory, supported by the Discovery Institute

Intelligent Design Theory, supported by the Discovery Institute (http://www.discovery.org/csc/)

This video is a discourse on arguments backing up their theories. Aim is nothing else then obtaining the right to teach alternative Ideas to Darwinism in public schools as well, since court decisions in the US forbade teaching of creationism in biology classes.

Let’s hope the Efforts of the Intelligent Design movement to become accepted are fruitful. Arguments are based on scientific reasonings that deserve attention.

National Geographic Tigers of the Snow

Tigers of the Snow presents the beautiful one-hour program on these endangered animals from award-winning wildlife filmmaker Mark Stouffer; plus the bonus never-before-released half-hour program entitled Tiger’s Eye; Siberian Tiger facts; an assortment of tiger photographs in the Photo Gallery; a map of the tigers’ range in Siberia; a Siberian Tigers interactive trivia quiz; and trailers of other related National Geographic programs.

Blake’s words “Tyger, tyger burning bright” come alive in this lush documentary from National Geographic. Tigers of the Snow spotlights the Siberian Tiger, which once roamed over the wide ranges of northern Asia but now is limited to a tiny region on the Sea of Japan. Footage of their active muscles, their piercing eyes, their regal pelt, all attest to the beauty of a dying breed. Russian and American scientists have banded together to study the 300 remaining not-so-gentle giants in an effort to save them from extinction. You’ll see these men and women track tigers from helicopters, brave a mother’s fury to tag her young, and strive to breed them in captivity.

BBC Natural World - Elephant Nomads of the Namib Desert

This is the remarkable story of two baby elephants struggling to survive their critical first six months in the oldest desert on earth. The Desert Elephants of Namibia suffered a poaching holocaust in the 1980s. As the most endangered elephant population in the world recovers, every single calf is vital. Himba and Dusty are born in a boom year, but when the short-lived rivers on which they depend disappear underground, their lives depend on the memories, experience and decisions of the females who lead their tiny families.

A little-known and surprising group of desert-dwelling elephants roams the far northwest of the Kunene region of Namibia in South West Africa. Extraordinary in their endurance, the small families make marathon treks between the remote shores of the Skeleton Coast and the high Kabere Mountains of the interior. These animals traverse some of the most dramatic, arid, and austere scenery in the world. The secretive nature of their existence was only revealed recently, when cameraman Martyn Colbeck followed them whilst working on the BBC’s landmark series Planet Earth.

The film takes place in the Northwestern Namib Desert. “Namib” means (“vast”). It’s sixteen hundred kilometres long, fifty thousand kilometres square. These are the harshest conditions in the world for elephants. Twenty-five years ago, out of eighty local desert elephants, poachers killed all but three. Now large-scale poaching has ended. The herd has a chance to recover…

The Gold Rush

On January 24, 1848, James Marshall found gold near the fork of the American and Sacramento Rivers, and unleashed a massive migration from around the world to what had been a forgotten backwater. With head-spinning speed, these gold-seekers created one of the most extraordinary societies in history — hard-driving, overwhelmingly male, often brutal.

The Gold Rush was a remarkably international event; in short order, gold-seekers from Oregon and the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), Mexico, Chile, England, France, Australia, Ireland, and China were soon knee-deep in water in the diggings. Each found themselves playing the Great California Lottery, in which luck not hard work or honesty, seemed the key to success.

Told though the stories of a small group of diverse characters, Chinese and Chilean, Northerner and Southerner, black and white and tracks the evolution of the Gold Rush from the easy riches of the first few months to the fierce competition for a few good claims. It shows that as the diggings became oppressively crowded, Americans drove foreigners from the mines. And it explores how in the end, the big money was made, not by men with shovels, but by large investments in expensive hydraulic equipment.

Nonetheless, in the hurly burly of the intervening years, the Gold Rush turned California into a place synonymous with risk, riches, and reinvention, a place where the impossible seemed likely.

The French Revolution is a definitive feature-length documentary that encapsulates this heady (and often headless) period in Western civilization.
With dramatic reenactments, illustrations, and paintings from the era, plus revealing accounts from journals and expert commentary from historians, The French Revolution vividly unfurls in a maelstrom of violence, discontent, and fundamental change. National Geographic - Stonehenge Decoded

Information
Stonehenge is one of the most mysterious prehistoric sites known to us and for centuries its purpose has been the source of intense speculation. Now in our ground-breaking special, British archaeologist Professor Mike Parker Pearson unearths surprising evidence supporting a radical new vision of Stonehenge.

His theory suggests that the stone circle was at the centre of one of the largest prehistoric religious complexes in the world. Parker Pearson and his team uncover the first evidence of a 4,500 year-old lost settlement – with at least 300 houses, it is the largest Stone Age settlement ever found in northern Europe.

At its centre lie the remains of a near replica of Stonehenge built of wood. He believes that Stonehenge was built to house the spirits of the dead while the wood circle represented the living. Further evidence suggests thousands of people gathered here at the summer and winter solstices.

Discovery Channel - Ancient Chinese Inventions

A documentary which challenges the assumption that there is something essentially Western about science and technology.

The World is forever in debt to China for its innovations. Ancient China was extreme advanced, and many of it’s discoveries are still in use today. This is what Robert Temple, the author of ‘The Genius of China - 3000 years of science, discovery, and invention’. The book is based on 11 main parts of Chinese innovation. Within these 11 categories, there are 3 main parts that contain the most significant inventions. Robert Temple concentrates the bulk of his examples in these three categories, agriculture, domestic and industrial technology, and engineering. Temple’s examples were not limited to these fields of innovation. The Chinese excelled in many other areas, including mathematics, warfare, and transportation, to name a few. Although Temple wrote about eleven fields of invention, I feel that these three sections contain the greatest examples of Chinese innovation, and the debt that the modern world owes China. The first main area is the field of engineering. Within this chapter, the development of iron and steel is the greatest achievement. The development of iron and steel led to other advances. By at least the 4th century the Chinese have developed blast furnaces to obtain cast iron from iron ore. This was 1200 years before the first blast furnace showed up in Europe. The reasons that the author gave to explain the reasons why the Chinese developed this technology are simple. The Chinese had access to large amounts of clay, the key ingredient in making blast furnaces. The Chinese also figured out that by adding a substance they called ”Black Earth,” they could lower the melting point of iron.

Discovery - Beyond Global Warming

In the Arctic, the icepack shrinks every year. To study environmental changes in the Canadian Arctic, researchers have a new floating laboratory - a converted ice breaker. Certain animal and plant species are currently under threat; others are invading or thriving as they never did before. But climate change has also produced opportunities, such as the Arctic’s vast oil and gas reserves, and a possible North-West passage trade route. So what does the warming up of the Arctic mean for the region and the world ?

History Channel: Night of the Long Knives

One of Adolf Hitler’s most brutal and dramatic exterminations came half a decade before the sins of the Holocaust. The SA was Hitler’s army of thugs, but the head of the SA, Ernst Roehm, was threatening Hitler’s rule. On June 29th 1934, Hitler ordered the SA leadership to appear for a meeting at the Hotel Hanselbauer. Without warning, the SS burst in, beginning 48 hours of bloodshed in which 1000 of the leading SA, including Roehm, were rounded up and slaughtered. This murderous deed became an ominous warning of what was to come. It is the single most significant episode in Hitler’s rise to absolute power, and the set the stage for World War and the Holocaust.

History Channel - Bible Battles

In one of the most hostile lands on the planet, an ancient people called the Israelites forged an army and carved out an empire. Their ancient military exploits are described in one of history’s most famous religious texts; the old testament of the Bible. But by reading between the religious lines, ancient military historians unlock the soldier’s secrets of the bible by examining the weapons, the strategies; and the commanders, some of whom are unlikely warriors, like Abraham, Moses, and Deborah. Bible Battles is a two hour hi-definition special that explores the biblical world from a military perspective from the time of Abraham, approximately 1500 BC, until David’s ascension to the throne, around 1000 BC. Using graphic battle re-creations choreographed by a Hollywood sword master, Bible Battles brings to life some of the most famous stories of the Bible, like the Exodus, the battle of Jericho, and David’s fight against Goliath; as well as more obscure stories like Abraham’s surprise nighttime raid against the Chaldeans, Gideon’s battle against the Midianites, and Jonathan’s daring attack against a Philistine outpost. Blood often flows more freely than holy water in the days of the Old Testament, and the military secrets of the Bible have yet to be revealed; until now.

THE WORLD HISTORY OF ORGANIZED CRIME -MAFIA COLUMBIA RUSSIA ITALY CHINA INDIA

This enthralling History Channel production looks at both the origins and current state of organized crime in Sicily, Russia, Colombia, India, and China. The series of five shows is thoroughly researched and beautifully put together, clearly elucidating the complex sociological roots that gave rise to today's cartels. Such fascinating topics as Russian prison tattoos and the ancient Indian Thug cult are discussed along the way. Though the producers don't shy away from pointing out governmental missteps that have inadvertently assisted in the rise of organized crime, the series comes down firmly on the side of law and order, and is careful to show the ruthlessness and brutality of the black market. The only hitches in the series come in the form of quick repetitions of information (that once followed commercial breaks), but these are only occasionally noticeable. Though densely informative, The World History of Organized Crime never becomes dull or dry--indeed, once you start watching it, it's almost impossible to stop

PBS - 1421: The Year China Discovered America?

1421: Year China Discovered America? Presents a startling journey of adventure and exploration that could turn the conventional view of world history on its head. This fascinating documentary examines the mystery surrounding the sailing exploits of the legendary Admiral Zhen He and his 30 year command of a gigantic Ming fleet. The Chinese court burned all records of Admiral Zhen He’s daring voyages and achievements, and unwittingly created a mystery that tantalizes the world 500 years later.

The documentary examines the mystery surrounding China’s legendary Zheng He and the spectacular Ming fleet of treasure junks he commanded in the early 15th century. The special provides a history of the known journeys of Zheng He’s fleet and an account of new information uncovered by Gavin Menzies, a former British submarine commander who has spent nine years trying to prove that Zheng He reached America decades before Columbus. Menzies, author of the best-selling book 1421: The Year China Discovered the World, has assembled evidence that he believes substantiates his theory.

The first part of the documentary presents 15th-century China as an emerging super-nation with an armada of treasure junks that dominated the Indian Ocean. At the behest of Chinese emperor Zhu Di, Zheng He sailed this fleet to far-flung outposts throughout the eastern hemisphere, established major ports and extended the commercial reach of “the Middle Kingdom” far beyond its previous bounds. The first segment recounts this story through re-enactments, extensive location filming and innovative computer graphics imaging models of the fleet itself.

1421: THE YEAR CHINA DISCOVERED AMERICA? then investigates the major historical mystery that arises from Menzies’ theory: Could this incredible and intrepid fleet have shown the European explorers the way to the west - reaching America’s shores decades before Columbus? Menzies seeks to prove his extraordinary theory by retracing the steps he believes the Chinese took from Africa to Europe to the Caribbean and along the eastern coast of the United States. The program examines the evidence behind his theory, then puts it to the test, drawing together historical accounts, archaeology and information from consultations with contemporary historians, archaeologists and scientists. The results are often dramatic and - like Menzies’ theory itself - highly controversial.

Alternative Medicine: The Evidence

3mpc41k45opw8vj6n20p.jpg

Series that looks at different types of alternative medicine. Kathy Sykes investigates the 2,000 year-old practice of acupuncture. In a Chinese hospital she sees doctors perform open heart surgery on a young woman using acupuncture instead of a general anaesthetic, and finds that acupuncture is often used alongside Western medicine and, at times, as a replacement. She meets scientists in the UK and in the US and discovers that acupuncture can have a powerful effect on chronic pain.

Australia, Land before Time

Extraordinary panoramic vistas, taken from a 2-engine plane with a camera attached to its nose, amazing geological facts, and marvelous animals, most of them unique to Australia, are what we get in this superb documentary of what is both the world’s smallest continent, and its largest island. Once joined to Antarctica many millions of years ago, with high mountains and lush forests, time transformed Australia into 3 million square miles of mostly arid flat land, and its creatures adapted to the different weather conditions. Fabulous and often amusing footage of kangaroos and koalas (both share the same ancestral marsupial possum), as well as desert creatures from ants to the giant and fearsome parenti lizard, and the "living contradiction," the platypus, are among the many delights shown in this film.

An event that only occurs approximately twice every century, torrential rains filling the Outback’s Lake Eyre, bringing long dormant animals to life, as well as flocks of pelicans, is caught on film, and is a spectacular sight. This is a glorious but harsh land, with a strange beauty that fills the soul. Australia is described as being more like another planet than another country, and this documentary has many images rarely seen.

Directed by David Flatman, written by Flatman, Meg Morrison, and poet Les Murray, it is narrated by Alex Scott, and has a lovely score by David Bridie. Made for IMAX in 2002, every aspect of "Australia, Land Beyond Time" is excellent, is a must for anyone interested in this great country, and those of us who like to explore foreign lands without leaving home.

911 Mysteries - Demolitions

90 minutes of pure demolition evidence and analysis, laced with eye-opening witness testimonials. Moving from "the myth" through "the analysis" and into "the players," careful deconstruction of the official story set right alongside clean, clear science. The 9/11 picture is not one of politics or nationalism or loyalty, but one of strict and simple physics. How do you get a 10-second 110-story pancake collapse?
A movie that might actually reach our complacent mainstream. No agenda. No finger-pointing. Just the facts and the "mysteries." Look at that. Think about this. A story of people: Willie Rodriguez's strange recollection of noises on the 34th floor. Who was up there, bumping around? Scott Forbes' similar story, weeks before the towers fell. A story of blasting itself. Here's how shaped charges slice through steel beams to control the way they fall.
"Excellent. The best of the 9/11 movies." --David Ray Griffin, author of The New Pearl Harbor
"WOW! is my reaction to this movie. Great insight into demolitions and what really happened on 9/11/2001." --Steven E. Jones, physics professor, Brigham Young University
"An outstanding contribution to understanding 9/11. Simply superb." --James H. Fetzer, founder, Scholars for 911 Truth
"A superb work and asset to the patriot community and America itself." --Aaron Russo, producer/director, America: From Freedom to Fascism

The Mossad is renowned for its efficiency and effectiveness as an intelligence and espionage agency. Efficiency and effectiveness may be interpreted by some as brutality and ruthlessness. There are few 'punches pulled' in this program. This program deals with some of the Mossad's most spectacular 'successes' and some of its failures. The role it has played since its formation has been crucial to the survival of Israel.

Holocaust - The Liberation of Majdanek (1978)

Up until it's release on video, this Russian footage had never been shown in the West. Majdanek was unique as it was the only concentration camp operational at the time of it's liberation. The concentration and extermination camp Majdanek, near Lublin, was erected in 1941, and liberated on July 23rd 1944.The speed of the Soviet advance gave the Germans no time to destroy or conceal evidence of the atrocities they had committed. This rare and stark documentary graphically portrays the terrible tragedy of the 'Two Million' innocent victims exterminated and the frightful efficiency of the NAZI DEATH FACTORY.Captured on films are SS Officers and Kapo's appearing before a Russian Tribunal at Lublin. They are confronted by surviving inmates who are giving evidence against the accused for their hideous war crimes. It culminated in their deserved conviction and execution by hanging.

Battle of Chernobyl

“ Thursday 26th April 1986 became a momentous date in modern history, when one of the reactors at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in northern Ukraine, exploded. It was the most significant reactor failure in the history of nuclear power, a Maximum Credible Accident (MCA).
The plant, just 20 km away from the town centre, was made up of four reactor units each generating an output of 1,000 megawatts. The reactor in question exploded due to operational errors and inadequate safety measures and the meltdown was directly linked to routine testing on the reactor unit’s turbine generators. The test required reactor activity and the thermal reactor output to be run down to a lower level. During the procedure, however, the reactor plummeted to an unexpectedly low and unstable level of activity. At this point, it should have been shut down; as the operators chose to continue with the test, the events subsequently proved to be catastrophic.
More than 200 people died or were seriously injured by radiation exposure immediately after the explosion. 161,000 people had to be evacuated from a 30 kilometre radius of the reactor and 25,000 square km of land were contaminated. As time went on millions of people suffered radiation related health problems such as leukaemia and thyroid cancer and around 4,000 people have died as a result of the long-term effects of the accident.
The Chernobyl disaster brought the ongoing discussion of the pros and cons of nuclear power to the forefront of public attention. Critics saw the reactor failure as dramatic and alarming evidence to support their anti-nuclear stance. Advocates of nuclear power insisted that the fragile Chernobyl reactor was an outdated model, and that the plants of Western Europe and the US demonstrated a vastly improved safety culture thanks to their more advanced technology.
These conflicting assessments of the accident have led to extensive research into nuclear safety standards and the disposal of radioactive fuel elements. Today, the fundamental issues surrounding the benefits and risks of nuclear energy and its future role in power generation continue to be hotly debated. ”

The Mars Underground

Join us on a journey, the daring first human mission to the red planet and explore the challenges of surviving on Mars, a mysterious world that once had oceans, rivers and may have harbored simple life - the discovery of which could revolutionize our understanding of the universe.

Ever since the beginning of the space age, a number of scientists and engineers have dreamed of someday making that journey a reality.

One of the most outspoken of these is Dr. Robert Zubrin, a maverick aerospace-engineer and author known as the "Christopher Columbus of Mars".

For years, Zubrin has been designing and promoting a humans-to-Mars expedition, not as venture for the far future or one that will cost us impossible billions, but as a goal that could be attained within ten years. He sees continuing expeditions to Mars eventually leading to colonization and a second home for humanity through a process known as "terraforming" - turning Mars into a viable blue planet.

Shot entirely in breathtaking High Definition, THE MARS UNDERGROUND is a landmark documentary that brings to life Zubrin's vision through state-of-the-art 3D animation, and gives us a glimpses into the future of man's reign on Mars.

Why Reading Matters, BBC

Science writer Rita Carter tells the story of how modern neuroscience has revealed that reading, something most of us take for granted, unlocks remarkable powers. Carter explains how the classic novel Wuthering Heights allows us to step inside other minds and understand the world from different points of view, and she wonders whether the new digital revolution could threaten the values of classic reading.

Standard Operating Procedure

Is it possible for a photograph to change the world? Photographs taken by soldiers in Abu Ghraib prison changed the war in Iraq and changed Americas image of itself. Yet, a central mystery remains. Did the notorious Abu Ghraib photographs constitute evidence of systematic abuse by the American military, or were they documenting the aberrant behavior of a few bad apples? We set out to examine the context of these photographs. Why were they taken? What was happening outside the frame? We talked directly to the soldiers who took the photographs and who were in the photographs. Who are these people? What were they thinking? Over two years of investigation, we amassed a million and a half words of interview transcript, thousands of pages of unredacted reports, and hundreds of photographs. The story of Abu Ghraib is still shrouded in moral ambiguity, but it is clear what happened there. The Abu Ghraib photographs serve as both an expose and a coverup. An expose, because the photographs offer us a glimpse of the horror of Abu Ghraib; and a coverup because they convinced journalists and readers they had seen everything, that there was no need to look further. In recent news reports, we have learned about the destruction of the Abu Zubaydah interrogation tapes. A coverup. It has been front page news. But the coverup at Abu Ghraib involved thousands of prisoners and hundreds of soldiers. We are still learning about the extent of it. Many journalists have asked about the smoking gun of Abu Ghraib. It is the wrong question. As Philip Gourevitch has commented, Abu Ghraib is the smoking gun. The underlying question that we still have not resolved, four years after the scandal: how could American values become so compromised that Abu Ghraiband the subsequent coverupcould happen?

National Geographic Treasure Seekers: Empires Of India

“Discover the incredible history of India - as shaped by Babur, father of the Moghul Empire, and Clive, father of the British Raj in India.”

India, a land of seductive riches, land of the Koh-i-noor diamond, the priceless gem which legend says was given by the god Krishna to test mankind’s greed. Possessed of such wealth and beauty, thought Krishna, would men behave like beasts or would they think and achieve wisdom?

This is the story of India and its conquerors, told as part of the National Geographic ‘Treasure Seekers’ series.

One stormed south across the mountains. One came from across the seas. Both were hungry for wealth and dominion. Each would become his own answer to Krishna’s question. Wise man or beast?

India has for centuries beckoned the outsider. Many have vied for control of this fabled and diverse land. Two great empires established by the invading Moguls and the British, flourished on this vast sub-continent.

Famed for its wealth, its cultural treasures and its exoticism, for centuries India has seemed to outsiders an alluring, pliant world ripe for conquest and control.

In the 16th century the Turkaman warlord Babur stormed out of Central Asia and made the country his own. The Moghul Empire he founded became one of the most opulent and sophisticated in human history.

As it faded, a new conqueror and a new colonial power emerged on the scene. Robert Clive, a strange and self-destructive character took hold of the country in the 18th century and delivered it into the hands of the British.

This documentary is part of the highly acclaimed ‘Treasure Seekers’ series, produced for National Geographic.

This is a brand new episode from the landmark television series Battlefield . Dead Men's Secrets - Secrets Of Hitler's Special Forces

In the highly-structured world of the Nazi military machine, they were anomalies, joined not by shared skills, training or background. Culled from every branch of the services, they were the best that the Third Reich had to offer, and they tackled missions that the regular military could not handle. SECRETS OF HITLER'S SPECIAL FORCES tells the inside story of this elite company's daring operations, soaring with glider pilots to the Belgian fortress of Eben-Emael, parachuting into Crete, freeing Benito Mussolini from a mountaintop prison. Filled with rare photos, information gleaned from once-secret documents and never-before-seen footage filmed by Nazi cameramen, it is a captivating look inside one of the most extraordinary military teams ever assembled. Although they fought for a brutal and evil regime, the courage and skill of many of Hitler's Special Forces cannot be denied.

History Channel - The Egyptian Book of the Dead

This incredible documentary tells the story behind the oldest surviving document of Western civilisation.

The Papyrus of Ani, which is thought to date back to 1800BC, is the largest and most beautiful of all the Egyptian funery scrolls. Known widely as the ‘Book of the Dead’, it is an astounding collection of the writings that were placed in tombs as a means of guiding the ancient Egyptian soul on its journey to the afterlife.

The text, which was written by Egyptian Priests, outlines the progress of a soul into the afterlife, beginning with mummification, and culminating in the beautiful and terrifying ritual of ‘The Weighing of the Heart.’ It also contains spells and rituals to help the mummified corpse on its perilous voyage.

We follow the story of this tremendous document from its creation near the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes; to its re-discovery, and theft, in 1887. We look at the Indiana Jones-esque episode in which a nineteenth century British archaeologist was forced to steal the document in order to save it from destruction. When E.A. Wallis-Budge discovered the artefact in a recently unearthed tomb in Cairo's Valley of the Kings, the Egyptian Government refused to allow such a treasure to leave the country. Wallis-Budge was forced into a complex series of subterfuges in order to smuggle the scroll back to the British Museum, where he began the painstaking task of translating it.

Our exploration of this tome also prompts a comprehensive investigation into the vast and mysterious world of Egyptian religion and mythology, in which we attempt to decipher over 4,000 hieroglyphics using cutting-edge CGI graphics.

We also outline how the translation and resurrection of this ancient text shaped the modern world, including Christian religion, in ways that few people realise. Indeed, biblical scholars agree that portions of the Old Testament are direct descendants of the Egyptian text; some archaeologists argue that Moses carried a copy of ‘The Book of the Dead’ with him when he fled Egypt.

Our timeless tale, which spans the age of Papyrus to the era of the Podcast, reveals an influential and powerful work of spiritual literature.

We Were Warned: Tomorrow's Oil Crisis (2006), CNN Presents

"It is September 2009. A Category 5 hurricane roars through Houston, destroying oil refineries, drilling platforms and pipelines--the complex system that provides a quarter of our nation's daily fuel supply. Three days later, terrorists attack two key oil installations in Saudi Arabia, the world's largest supplier. In the days and weeks that follow, gasoline prices hit record highs, food prices soar as trucks cannot afford to make deliveries, and Americans begin to realize that their very way of life is in peril.

In "We Were Warned: Tomorrow's Oil Crisis", CNN's Frank Sesno explores the potential ripple effects of this frightening scenario. The events depicted are hypothetical, but oil experts believe the scenario is entirely plausible. His interviews with energy experts reveal that we are nearing the point at which the world, led by the U.S. and China, will begin to consume more oil than can be pumped from the ground and the oceans. Tracking the global race to find new pools of oil, Sesno also considers the viability of alternative fuels, such as ethanol, which is used as fuel for 40% of cars in Brazil. Throughout his investigation, Sesno tries to find out whether any of these ventures can solve our looming energy crisis or whether we are already too late."
