The return of the Taliban

After the fall of the Taliban five years ago, some experts warned of a nightmare scenario in which the Taliban and Al Qaeda would escape from Afghanistan into neighboring Pakistan and set up new command centers far out of America's reach.

That nightmare scenario has now come true.

The Taliban controls large parts of the lawless tribal areas along the border. In a video obtained by Frontline, the Taliban demonstrate their brutal brand of justice. After executing 17 people, said to be thieves, in front of a crowd of hundreds, they hung the bodies on poles for three days. "We have killed these people and sent them to God," a Taliban gunman says to the camera. "God will bring them to justice."

Frontline reports from the lawless Pakistani tribal areas along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and reveals how the area has fallen under the control of a resurgent Taliban militia which uses the territory as a launching pad for its attacks on U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan. Little understood because it is off limits to most observers, Frontline investigates a secret front in the War on Terror.

"The United States is beginning to recognize that its project in Afghanistan will fail unless it addresses the sanctuary and support that the Taliban enjoys in Pakistan," says Steve Coll. "But the United States has not yet reached the point where it knows what kind of ... policy it is prepared to carry out."

Secret Mysteries Of America's Beginnings III - Eye Of The Phoenix; Secrets Of The Dollar Bill

“Eye of the Phoenix” documents the bizarre history of the design of the dollar bill, exposing the occult activity surrounding the FDR administration. There is perhaps no other period in U.S. history when so many people were so deeply involved in the occult, and held positions of power that reached all the way to the White House. Phoenix focuses specifically on the years prior to World War II leading up to 1935, when the Great Seal was taken out of obscurity and placed on the foundation of America's currency.

According to official records from the State Department, FDR and his Secretary of Agriculture, Henry Wallace, specifically chose to use the Great Seal because, as Freemasons, they believed the “Novus Ordo Seclorum” (which they equated with the New Deal) could only be fulfilled under “the eye” of the Great Architect of the Universe (the god of Masonry).

Two heavily influential occultists during the FDR era were Manly P. Hall and a Russian mystic named Nicholas Roerich. Manly Hall's writings influenced Freemasonic presidents FDR and Harry S. Truman. It is even said that Hall was responsible for the number of stones on the pyramid of the Great Seal, and for the identification of the eagle as a phoenix.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Roerich was an international figure and Theosophist. His quest for Shambhala and the Stone of Destiny (symbols of the New World Order) captivated Henry Wallace. According to a variety of sources, it was Roerich's influence over Wallace (and ultimately FDR) that led to the placement of the Great Seal on America's currency. As American Heritage writes: “The State Department grew very nervous about Roerich, but he had influence in the Oval Office.”

Some Christian leaders continue to downplay the occult nature of the dollar bill; but once you understand the beliefs and influence of Roerich, Wallace and Manly Hall, you will clearly recognize the Luciferian nature of its design.

Also discussed in this documentary are: the Bohemian Grove, the Illuminati past and present, Theosophical Society, Benjamin Creme and the Maitreya (i.e. Antichrist); along with a prediction for how the dollar will be used to establish the New World Order.

Oil Spill - The Exxon Valdez Disaster

Just after midnight on Good Friday 1989, the giant supertanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in Alaska's Prince William Sound to create one of the biggest man-made ecological disasters of the 20th century.

Eleven million gallons of crude oil gushed from the stricken tanker into the pristine waters of the Sound, killing whales, millions of fish and birds, and thousands of sea otters. The spill had a catastrophic effect on local communities, wiping out their herring fishery and severely depleting the Alaskan salmon industry for years to come.

Twenty years on, this programme retraces the catalogue of errors that led to the disaster and investigates the legacy of the spill and the lasting environmental damage to Prince Wiliam Sound, featuring interviews with crew members aboard the supertanker on the fateful night, with the Exxon executives and Alaskan politicians in the eye of the storm and with the local fishermen and activists who had prophetically warned of disaster and now lead the fight for justice.

Episode 1 - Winter

In winter, Yellowstone is frozen solid - locked in snow as deep as a house for over six months. As we follow the grip of winter over the course of six freezing months, we chart the fortunes of Yellowstone's wildlife in a finely balanced fight to survive. Bison use their massively powerful heads to dig with through some of the deepest snow in America to reach the grass beneath. A red fox listens out for mice scurrying six feet beneath the snow before diving head first into the drift to snap up its prey, while otters slide through Yellowstone's winter wonderland to find any remaining open water where they can fish. All the while, as the herds of elk and bison are gradually weakened by the cold, one animal gets stronger - the wolf. But with one of the world's largest volcanoes beneath the surface, everything from the freezing cold to the creation of a snow storm is determined by the power at Yellowstone's heart.

Yellowstone is one of the snowiest places in America and, as the winter progresses, it rapidly transforms into a wonderland. But for the few buildings of the National Park, all this snow brings a problem: if left unchecked, it can bury and crush them. Jeff's job is to save the buildings by clearing the snow faster than it can fall, and he has perfected his own unique method that allows him to shift the maximum amount of snow in the least time with the minimum amount of effort. Just like the animals, he has worked out that it pays to conserve energy when temperatures can drop to minus 40 degrees centigrade - but with milder winters predicted in the future, Jeff worries that he may soon be out of a job.

Japan in Colour - The Wonderful World of Albert Kahn (March 2009)
In 1908, the French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn launched one of the most ambitious projects in the history of photography. A pacifist, internationalist and utopian idealist, Kahn decided to use his private fortune to improve understanding between the nations of the world. To this end, he created what he called his Archive of the Planet. For the next two decades, he dispatched professional photographers to document the everyday lives of people in more than 50 countries all around the world. Kahn's wealth enabled him to supply his photographers with the most advanced camera technology available. They used the autochrome - the first user-friendly camera system capable of producing true-colour photographs.

Some of the most important of all the 72,000 colour images in Kahn's Archive were shot during three separate visits (in 1908, 1912 and 1926) to Japan. As an international financier, Kahn had established a network of contacts that included some of the most prominent members of Japan's business, banking and political elites. Consequently, Kahn's photographers were granted privileged access to places that would have otherwise been off limits - including some of the royal palaces, where they shot colour portraits of the princes and princesses from Japan's Imperial family. But some of their most fascinating images capture moments from the lives of ordinary Japanese people at work and play. This film showcases Kahn's treasury of films and autochromes of silk-farmers, Shinto monks, schoolchildren, porcelain merchants, Kabuki stars and geishas - pictures that were recorded at a time when this fascinating country was going through momentous changes.

Isaac Newton: The Dark Heretic, Newton set 2060 as the end of the world

Newton, the father of modern mathematics, dedicated a large part of his life to a quest to decode the Bible which he believed to be the word of God.

For over 50 years, he studied the Bible trying to unravel God's secret laws of the Universe.

He was fanatical in his quest to discover the date for the Second Coming of Christ and the end of the world.

Scholars have spent years trying to unravel Newton's writings on the Book of Revelation to establish when he thought the apocalypse was coming.

For the first time, Newton: The Dark Heretic reveals the date he forecast is within many people's lifetimes - 2060.

The BBC was given rare access to Newton's original manuscripts in the Hebrew National Library in Jerusalem.

Buried in his papers, Dr Stephen Snobelen, from the University of King's College in Nova Scotia, found the original document where Newton had written down his prediction.

In 2060, Newton believed the dramatic events forecast in the apocalyptic Book of Revelation would occur: massive plagues and fires; the terrible battle of Armageddon between good and evil and the destruction and eternal damnation of the wicked.

Producer Malcolm Neaum says: "Newton prayed daily for the end of the world which he believed would herald the Second Coming of Christ. This would usher in the 1000 year rule of the Saints and Newton believed he would then take his place as Chief Saint."

Black Holes

Black holes were once thought to be the monsters of the Universe, devouring everything around them in a frenzied cosmic feast. But now astronomers think that rather than being a space menace, black holes may be fundamental to the creation of galaxies.

Black holes are regions of space where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape, making them impossible to see. But we can see the stuff that is being sucked in to these massive cosmic vacuum cleaners. Anything that approaches a black hole is first torn apart by its immense gravitational force and then forms a flat rotating disc that spirals into the hole.

As this debris gets closer and closer to the mouth of the black hole it speeds up and the bits start to smash together. The material heats up due to this friction [this is the same effect as when you rub your hands together to warm them up]. When this happens around a black hole, X-rays are given off which we can detect. If the black hole is really large and has lots of debris in its disc, then it can reveal itself as one of the brightest objects in the Universe - a quasar.

There are two main types of black hole - stellar and supermassive. Stellar sized black holes are the remnants of massive dead stars that have imploded. The nearest one to us is part of a binary system called Cygnus X-1, discovered in 1971. It is in the constellation of Cygnus, also known as the Northern Cross. It's estimated that our galaxy contains millions of these stellar black holes. Supermassive black holes, on the other hand, can have initial masses millions of times that of the Sun. It's now thought that they may lurk in the centre of every galaxy and be integral to the way galaxies evolve. There might also be other types of black holes, such as mini black holes, smaller (in volume) than atoms but as massive (in amount of matter) as whole mountains. Or even middle-sized black holes, mid-way between the stellar and supermassive variety. It's possible that there could be such things as 'white holes', the opposite of black holes, spewing out matter and energy into the Universe. However, this is just another of the cosmic mysteries still awaiting a solution.

Jesus Camp (2006), An unflinching look at Evangelical indoctrination

A growing number of Evangelical Christians believe there is a revival underway in America whereby Christian youth must take up the leadership of the conservative Christian movement.

JESUS CAMP, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (The Boys of Baraka), follows Levi, Rachael, Tory and a number of other young children to Pastor Becky Fischer's Kids on Fire summer camp in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, where kids as young as 6 years-old are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in God's army. Battlefront - Battle of Malta (WWII)

The Siege of Malta was a significant Military campaign in the Mediterranean Theatre of World War II that occurred between 1940 - 1942 on the island of Malta. The siege was conducted by the Air Forces and Navies and of Italy and Nazi Germany, the Axis powers, while the Allied forces protecting Matla consisted of the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. Malta was one of the most intensively-bombed areas during the war – The Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica flew a total of 3,000 bombing raids occurred during the two years of the siege. The island of Malta was pivotal to the North African Campaign due to its strategic position. Control of Malta enabled control of the centeral Mediterranean sea. Axis control of this strip of sea would enable the Axis to ship uninterrupted flows of supplies to Axis forces in North Africa. Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel said, "Without Malta the Axis will end by losing control of North Africa".

Over two astonishing days in October 2008 one of the most amazing stories of the downturn emerged. Porsche, the luxury sports car manufacturer, was revealed as the force behind an audacious takeover bid for Volkswagen.

It has been highly effective, last year it made four times as much money from share trading than from making its iconic sports cars.

The Money Programme's Max Flint travels to Germany to investigate how Porsche became so expert in playing the market and how it could end up with the biggest prize of all: control of its rival.

Fall From Grace (2007), Documentary about Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church

The first feature-length documentary to explore the hate-filled world of Rev. Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, a group of fanatic, extremist Christians. Since the mid-1990s, this group has participated in nearly 25,000 anti-homosexual demonstrations around the world. With signs that say things like "God hates fags", "You're going to Hell", "Thank God for 9/11", "God hates America", and "Thank God for dead soldiers" at places such as US soliders funerals, this small congregation of 75 members has garnered international attention, especially now that they have targeted military funerals as a venue for their picketing. Moore embarked on a 42-day, 62-city tour of battleground states in an effort to get young people, affectionately referred to as "slackers," to vote. More specifically, Moore wanted them to vote for John Kerry, though one gets the sense that he would have backed any Democrat.

In an effort to speak their language, Moore declared that none of his events would start before noon, and he offered Ramen noodles and clean underwear in exchange for slackers coming onstage with him and registering to vote.

When Bush was re-elected, Moore shelved the film because he felt as though the battle was lost. He showed it as a special surprise at the 2006 Traverse City Film Festival and brought it to the Toronto Film Festival last year, where it was called "Captain Mike Across America." The response it garnered there prompted him to give the film a wider release.

The film presents Moore as something of a rock star, as he speaks in front of many large crowds in some big-city venues. He is met with thunderous applause, and, as the writer and director, he makes certain to include the glowing introductions he receives from many of his friends.

The heart of "Slacker Uprising" is the notion that each and every American has the ability to have their voice heard via one of the most inalienable human rights -- the right to vote.

Award-winning Pakistani journalist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy investigates how the war on terror is creating a generation of child terrorists in her homeland - children prepared to kill both inside and outside Pakistan.

Sharmeen investigates how the Taliban are recruiting increasingly younger fighters to their campaign. She meets a 14-year-old boy in her home city of Karachi who is desperate to become a suicide bomber. She then follows the elite unit of the anti-terror police squad - who warn that the Taliban are hiding out in the city's sprawling slums and recruiting children from small madrassas in deprived neighbourhoods.

Sharmeen also interviews a Taliban commander responsible for child recruitment, who reveals that children as young as five are now being used by the Taliban.

PBS NOW - 2006.06.16 - Oil Royalties

"As oil and gas companies continue to make enormous profits in a time of record-high gas prices, watchdog groups are accusing these companies of shortchanging American taxpayers out of billions of dollars in royalties for drilling rights on public property. Members of Congress are also being blamed for making sweetheart deals with Big Oil engineered to avoid the payment of royalties. "These oil companies along with some members of Congress have really engineered one of the greatest train robberies of all time," says California Congressman George Miller. You might not realize it, but American taxpayers own some very valuable property, some of it located in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. If oil and gas companies want to drill on this territory they are required to lease it out from the U.S. government, which collects royalties from them on the taxpayers' behalf.

Big Money

It's no paltry sum. Royalties from oil and gas exploration are the government's second largest source of revenue, behind income tax. "I think the American taxpayers are losing billions of dollars," Kevin Gambrell, former director of the Federal Indian Minerals Office in Farmington, New Mexico, told NOW. Gambrell worked for seven years collecting royalties from petroleum companies working on federal and Native American lands in the Four Corners region. "I think oil and gas companies were always trying to figure out how not to pay royalties or to pay as little as possible," Gambrell said. He said he caught many oil and gas companies lying and cheating to avoid paying the full royalties owed. He adds that when he tried to go after a company for the royalties they owed, he received phone calls from Congressional offices leaning on him to side with industry.

The Royalty Treatment

Back in 1995, Congress passed the Deep Water Royalty Relief Act that reduced the amount of royalties oil and gas companies had to pay. At the time, when gas prices were fairly low, the move was seen by many as an incentive to get petroleum companies to drill for oil and natural gas and keep energy production inside the United States. Since then, a number of other royalty relief measures have been passed, such as the one included in the most recent energy bill, signed last summer, which increased the amount of oil that can be drilled without paying royalties. Royalty relief under the 1995 act could cost taxpayers up to $80 billion over the next twenty-five years, depending upon the outcome of an industry lawsuit, according to a recent draft report by the Government Accountability Office. This includes a mistake by the government when drawing up some of the royalty agreements, which could cost $10 billion.

Twenty years ago, novelist Salman Rushdie was a wanted man with a million pound bounty on his head. His novel, The Satanic Verses, had sparked riots across the Muslim world. The ailing religious leader of Iran, the Ayatollah Khomeini, had invoked a little-known religious opinion - a fatwa - and effectively sentenced Rushdie to death. National Geographic-The Hunt for Hitler's scientists

In the closing months of World War II, defeat was looming for the Germans. The invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 -- D-Day -- opened a second Allied front, and the Allies began overtaking a host of German positions; Paris was liberated on August 25; Romania and Bulgaria surrendered in quick succession. But the Nazis did not intend to go down without a fight -- and without inflicting as much damage as possible on the Allies. To do so, they employed or planned to employ an increasingly deadly array of military weapons -- from ballistic missiles to rocket planes to, perhaps, the atomic bomb.

The British, American, and Russian governments were not content to sit idly by, waiting to be slammed by the advanced technology. Covert teams of commandos and agents were sent ahead of the front lines and deep into Germany, hunting for both the weapons and the scientists and engineers who'd created them. For British and American operatives, failure was not an option. If they didn't capture the Nazi technology and scientists, agents of the burgeoning Soviet Union might -- and that could spell disaster in a post-war world already feeling the chill of the impending cold war.


Allied agents focused their efforts on three key Nazi technologies:

The V-2 Rocket
Germany's Vergeltungswaffen 2 (or "weapon of reprisal") rocket, a successor to the earlier V-1 "buzz bomb," was first launched successfully toward Western Europe on September 8, 1944. The behemoth, 46-foot-tall weapon -- devised by scientist Wernher von Braun (see sidebar), head of the Nazi rocket program -- streaked across the skies faster than the speed of sound and carried over a ton of explosives. More frightening was the weapon's accuracy. A series of internal and external rudders and a guidance system near the nose controlled the flight of the rocket-fuel powered missile, so that it could hit a particular city from a distance of over two hundred miles. The V-2 was the world's first ballistic missile. More than 3,000 V-2s, produced in an underground factory called the Mittelwerk, were rained onto Europe in the months before Germany's surrender.

Hot on the trail of the V-2, von Braun, and his scientists were American and Russian agents. Each group wanted not just to stop the rain of bombs, but also to acquire the technology for themselves.

The Messerschmitt 163 Komet
This bizarre and revolutionary plane, brainchild of German aircraft designer Helmut Walter, was powered with a unique combination of fuels: T-Stoff (a mixture of 80 percent hydrogen peroxide and 20 percent water) and C-Stoff (a mixture of hydrazine hydrate, methyl alcohol, and water) that were ignited with oxygen from the plane's exhaust. The powerful cocktail accelerated the fighter to speeds of 550 miles per hour and flung it to a maximum altitude of nearly 40,000 feet in just three and a half minutes. The tailless plane, also known as the "Flying Bomb," had numerous drawbacks. It took off from a trolley and touched down -- without landing gear -- on a skid running down the center of the bottom of the plane. It could sustain only 8 minutes of powered flight.

Despite the plane's limitations, the Allies were eager to get their hands on it. The British deployed the top secret 30/Commando/Assault Unit, or 30 AU, an elite squad of operatives drawn from the three branches of the military, the Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force (and organized by Ian Fleming, who later created James Bond), who specialized in infiltrating behind the front lines, ahead of the advancing Allied forces.

The Atomic Bomb
In 1938, German physicists in Berlin were the first to discover fission, the splitting of the atom -- and the basic process behind nuclear weapons. Although World War II had not yet started, the feat caused great alarm in the United States. If the Germans could split the atom, would an atomic bomb be next?

This concern ultimately led to the formation of the Manhattan Project, the United States government's secret endeavor to build the bomb. As expected, a team of German scientists, led by physicist Werner Heisenberg, had already left the starting gates of the race toward the bomb -- and they quickly began to collect and stockpile the uranium that would fuel it.

The American government, with no way of knowing how close the Germans were to success (it turns out, not very), launched a dramatic post-D-Day mission to search Germany for the bomb project, Heisenberg and his team, and the uranium. The mission, manned by a crack team of agents and led by Lieutenant Colonel Boris T. Pash, was code-named Alsos, the Greek word for "grove," in honor of General Leslie R. Groves, the head of the Manhattan Project.

United States: Extraordinary Rendition

“They pushed me down onto the floor of the van. There was blood everywhere, on my hands, my knees,” Egyptian cleric Abu Omar tells FRONTLINE/World reporter Stephen Grey about being snatched off the street by the CIA. “As we drove along, I started to choke. … It felt like I was dying. Then I disappeared from history.”

“Somebody came, removed the hood, removed the cuffs and left me in the shackles,” Bisher al-Rawi, a longtime British resident, says of his arrival at an infamous secret CIA “black site” in Afghanistan. “And that was the ‘Dark Prison.’… It was a very, very cold place. … You had some sort of odd voices, not music, playing on speakers. … You had people coming to check you were alive—not OK, but alive. … [For] the duration of the dark prison I had shackles on. I just took it as it came.”

These are among the voices of CIA “ghost prisoners” speaking for the first time on U.S. television as part of FRONTLINE/World’s Extraordinary Rendition, an international investigation by the award-winning journalist Stephen Grey of the United States government’s controversial, extralegal detention and interrogation program, airing Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at 9 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings). Grey, the former head of investigations at The Sunday Times of London and the author of the acclaimed book Ghost Plane: The True Story of the CIA Rendition and Torture Program (St. Martin’s, 2006), was one of the first journalists to uncover the secrets of the CIA rendition program. In recent weeks, President Bush has publicly defended CIA interrogation methods as legal, despite charges from within his own administration that CIA treatment of “ghost prisoners” was “abhorrent.”

Initially, as Grey and others discovered, key terror suspects were transferred by the CIA to countries like Egypt and Jordan, where many believe the United States was “outsourcing torture” to foreign intelligence services. The Bush administration claims it insisted that the countries who accepted the CIA’s rendered prisoners would not use torture. “You can say we asked them not to do it,” says Tyler Drumheller, the former head of CIA operations in Europe, about these assurances the prisoners would not be tortured. “But when you turn someone over to another country you can’t say to them, ‘This is how we expect you to treat them.’ … If you know that this is how this country has treated people in the past, you have to be honest that that is going to be a part of it.”

As the rendition program grew, and the White House drew up controversial legal authorization for secret detention and “enhanced interrogation techniques,” such as water boarding, the CIA began maintaining its own “black sites” for “high-value” terror suspects. One of these black sites, it was revealed this summer, was in Poland. Another was near an air strip in eastern Romania where the CIA began to interrogate prisoners themselves. “There wasn’t a bed, just a mattress and blanket and a bucket to urinate and defecate in,” says Mohammed Bashmillah, who was tracked down by Grey in Yemen a year after his release by the CIA without charge. “We were chained by our legs for a period of about a month after our arrival. When they called us for interrogation, they bound us by the hands and legs, and covered our heads.”

In September 2006, after a number of public disclosures and a key Supreme Court decision, President Bush was finally forced to acknowledge the existence of the secret rendition program. He announced the emptying of the CIA’s black sites and the transfer of high-value detainees to Guantanamo Bay, where they would face military tribunals. But Grey and others have shown that dozens of known detainees, including so-called high-value prisoners, remain unaccounted for.

Then in early 2007 Grey discovered more secret flights—this time in the Horn of Africa on planes chartered by the Kenyan government. Fatma Chande, the wife of a suspected member of Al Qaeda, tells Grey she was picked up by the Kenyans, she believes, on behalf of the Americans. “The police tried to force me to admit my husband was a member of Al Qaeda. I told them he was just a businessman. They kept banging on the table. They threatened to strangle me if I didn’t tell them the truth.”

The CIA says this wasn’t a U.S. operation, but Jack Cloonan, a veteran FBI officer with deep experience on terror cases before and after 9/11, told Grey: “It’s called plausible deniability. The agency and the bureau are not going to admit that they were witting of this at all, … but they probably were the power brokers behind the scenes pushing this forward. … This new era of going onto the African continent and outsourcing [interrogation], I think, is frankly new.”

Now, as the fate of many rendered men remains uncertain at Guantanamo Bay, and many others remain unaccounted for, President Bush has reportedly signed a new executive order. Its secret contents, many believe, have reauthorized the CIA to once again render terror suspects to black sites where “enhanced” interrogation techniques are applied.

“The program is back on,” Stephen Grey says. “The people in the CIA are pretty reluctant about it, but they’ve got their orders, and until America finds a way of actually bringing people to trial in a courtroom, people in the CIA have got very little alternative to holding them in these black sites secretly or rendering them to allies who will do their bidding.”

PBS Frontline: Inside the Meltdown

As the housing bubble burst and trillions of dollars' worth of toxic mortgages began to go bad in 2007, fear spread through the massive firms that form the heart of Wall Street. By the spring of 2008, burdened by billions of dollars of bad mortgages, the investment bank Bear Stearns was the subject of rumors that it would soon fail.

"Rumors are such that they can just plain put you out of business," Bear Stearns' former CEO Alan "Ace" Greenberg tells FRONTLINE.

The company's stock had dropped from $171 to $57 a share, and it was hours from declaring bankruptcy. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke acted. "It was clear that this had to be contained. There was no doubt in his mind," says Bernanke's colleague, economist Mark Gertler.

Bernanke, a former economics professor from Princeton, specialized in studying the Great Depression. "He more than anybody else appreciated what would happen if it got out of control," Gertler explains.

To stabilize the markets, Bernanke engineered a shotgun marriage between Bear Sterns and the commercial bank JPMorgan, with a promise that the federal government would use $30 billion to cover Bear Stearns' questionable assets tied to toxic mortgages. It was an unprecedented effort to stop the contagion of fear that seemed to be threatening the rest of Wall Street.

While publicly supportive of the deal, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, a former Wall Street executive with Goldman Sachs, was uncomfortable with government interference in the markets. That summer, he issued a warning to his former colleagues not to expect future government bailouts, saying he was concerned about a legal concept known as moral hazard.

Within months, however, Paulson would witness the virtual collapse of the giant mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and preside over their takeover by the federal government.

The episode sent shockwaves through the economy as confidence in Wall Street began to evaporate. Within days, in September 2008, another investment bank, Lehman Brothers, was on the brink of collapse. Once again, there were calls for Bernanke and Paulson to bail out the Wall Street giant. But Paulson was under intense political pressure from conservative Republicans in Washington to invoke moral hazard and let the company fail.

"You had a conservative secretary of the Treasury and conservative administration. There was right-wing criticism over Bear Stearns," says Congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

Paulson pushed Lehman's CEO Dick Fuld to find a buyer for his ailing company. But no company would buy Lehman unless the government offered a deal similar to the one Bear Stearns had received. Paulson refused, and Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy.

FRONTLINE then chronicles the disaster that followed. Within 24 hours, the stock market crashed, and credit markets around the world froze. "We're no longer talking about mortgages," says economist Gertler. "We're talking about car loans, loans to small businesses, commercial paper borrowing by large banks. This is like a disease spreading."

"I think that the secretary of the Treasury could not fully comprehend what that linkage was and the extent to which this would materialize into problems," says former Lehman board member Henry Kaufman.

Paulson was thunderstruck. "This is the utter nightmare of an economic policy-maker," Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman tells FRONTLINE. "You may have just made the decision that destroyed the world. Absolutely terrifying moment."

In response, Paulson and Bernanke would propose -- and Congress would eventually pass -- a $700 billion bailout plan. FRONTLINE goes inside the deliberations surrounding the passage of the legislation and examines its unsuccessful implementation.

"Many Americans still don't understand what has happened to the economy," FRONTLINE producer/director Michael Kirk says. "How did it all go so bad so quickly? Who is responsible? How effective has the response from Washington and Wall Street been? Those are the questions at the heart of Inside the Meltdown."
