Back In The Hood - Gang War 2

It's been almost a decade since Marc Levin and Daphne Pinkerson exposed gang warfare in the heartland with the 1994 HBO documentary "Gang War: Bangin' in Little Rock." Now, the filmmakers return to Little Rock to update the stories of several gang members profiled in the first film.

BACK IN THE HOOD: GANG WAR 2 follows Leifel Jackson, onetime leader of the OGCs (Original Gangster Crips), as he is released from prison after almost a decade behind bars for drug trafficking. Jackson was one of the targets in the 1993 drive-by shooting captured in the first "Gang War" documentary. Now he is trying to live straight and make a positive difference in his neighborhood, but every day is a struggle.

"I think it's a lot easier doing time than it is out here struggling to make ends meet," explains Jackson. "I'm going to have to make an example, and my example is that you can come home, regardless of how long you're gone, and make it."

This film, based upon recently released information, details his treachery and should be of interest to students of the history of the Soviet political system.

The show concentrated on several different areas of body modification, beginning with
suspension. While they called this ritual a body modification several times, they also
acknowledged it as a ritual. A brief look at Native American suspension rituals and brief
interview clips with Fakir Musafar -- who was quoted throughout the entire show --
highlighted this quick lesson into the background and history of suspensions. Also
included was a nice collection of footage and interviews from a suspension convention
featuring Allen Falkner. The footage showed a more accepting approach to suspension
compared to previous shows, which have
portrayed the ritual with shock and sometimes disgust. Through the story of a
first-timer who was nervous about the entire ritual -- from the piercings to the
suspension itself -- this show illustrated a kind and caring set of professionals who
make the process of undergoing one's first suspension an enjoyable one. This segment
would make someone considering undergoing the ritual who has hesitations about how
approachable a suspension group would be lose their hesitations.

IMAX - Volcanoes of the Deep Sea

Volcanoes of the Deep Sea is an Imax production conceived by Rich Lutz, a Rutgers University marine biologist. For more than a decade, Dr. Lutz has been working thousands of feet under the ocean, studying life unexpectedly discovered in the late 1970s. Down in the deepest abysses of the ocean, hitherto unknown life forms are growing in the most poisonous atmosphere in the world, the area around hypothermal vents--the volcanoes of the deep sea. Scientists believe that they may hold the secret of the origins of life on earth. The scenery is awe-inspiring, offering views never before seen by anyone as they are in this film. Cousteau's exploration, for example, barely dipped below the ocean's surface in comparison with the depths plumbed here, along an active volcanic ridge 8600 feet under the sea. Even the deep sea researchers themselves have never before been able to flood areas the size of a football field with intense illumination, as director Stephen Low's crew did, by attaching lights to the deep sea explorer Alvin. Animations of the actual volcanic explosions were so good and so well integrated that it was hard to tell if they were real or not. The deep sea creatures themselves are as marvelously bizarre in their appearance as they are in their biology.

Canadian documentary filmmaker Stephen Low directs the IMAX movie with Titanic director James Cameron as the executive producer.

Hosts Jason Chambers and Bill Duff travel to the island nation of the Philippines, where the indigenous fighting style, Eskrima, was formed. Why Democracy - Taxi to the Dark Side (2007), The documentary Discovery channel was too afraid to show

Taxi to the Dark Side takes an in-depth look at the torture practices of the United States in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, focusing on an innocent taxi driver in Afghanistan who was tortured and killed in 2002.

This documentary was supposed to have been aired on Discovery channel prior to the 2008 election. Discovery chickened out in fear that showing the documentary would hurt the station and instead the documentary will now only be aired in September 2008 on HBO. For more info on this matter check

When Dinosaurs Ruled: China

Documentary that explores the latest in a series of paleological discoveries in China which support the hypothesis that dinosaurs evolved into birds. In 1993, after the Gobi Desert had been off limits to Westerners for over 70 years, dino hunter Mark Norell found evidence that Oviraptors sat on nests of their young. Also, an amateur fossil hunter and farmer discovered the fossil of a Sinosauropteryx (Chinese Dragon Wing). The fossil was so highly detailed, it appears the creature had feathers. Then, in an area known as Paleo-Pompeii, one of the most fossil-rich regions of the world, an animal related to the Raptors was discovered. But, instead of teeth, its jaws had a beak and instead of scales, it was covered with feathers. It was named Caudipteryx, meaning tail feather.

Most Evil Men In History - Vlad The Impaler

Vlad Dracolya, the fifteenth century voevod prince, also known as Vlad the Impaler, is best remembered as the inspiration for Bram Stoker's famous novel, Dracula. His true history, in fact, is far more facinating than any vampire story.

More than anything else, the historical Dracula is known for his inhuman cruelty. Impalement was Dracula's preferred method of torture and execution, which he had learned in his youth as a prisoner of the Turks. It was and is one of the most gruesome ways of dying ever imagined. Dracula usually had a horse attached to each of the victim's legs as a sharpened stake was gradually forced into the body. The end of the stake was usually oiled and care was taken that the stake not be too sharp; else the victim might die too rapidly from shock. Normally the stake was inserted into the body through the anus and was often forced through the body until it emerged from the mouth. However, there were many instances where victims were impaled through other bodily orifices or through the abdomen or chest. Infants were sometimes impaled on the stake forced through their mother's chests. The records indicate that victims were sometimes impaled so that they hung upside down on the stake.

As expected, death by impalement was slow and painful. Victims sometimes endured for hours or days. Dracula often had the stakes arranged in various geometric patterns. The most common pattern was a ring of concentric circles in the outskirts of a city that constituted his target. The height of the spear indicated the rank of the victim. The corpses were often left decaying for months.

Thousands were often impaled at a single time. Ten thousand were impaled in the Transylvanian city of Sibiu (where Dracula had once lived) in 1460. The previous year, on Saint Bartholomew's Day (in August), Dracula had thirty thousand of the merchants and officials of the Transylvanian city of Braşov impaled. One of the most famous woodcuts of the period shows Dracula feasting amongst a forest of stakes and their grisly burdens outside Braşov, while a nearby executioner cuts apart other victims.

Impalement was Dracula's favorite but by no means his only method of torture. The list of tortures employed by this cruel prince reads like an inventory of infernal deeds: nails in heads, cutting off of limbs, blinding, strangulation, burning, cutting off of noses and ears, mutilation of sexual organs (especially in the case of women), scalping, skinning, exposure to the elements or to wild animals, and boiling alive.

Most Evil Women In History - Elisabeth Countess Bathory

Elisabeth Bathory was born in Hungary in 1560. At the age of 15 she married to Count Ferencz Nadasdy and took residence in castle Csejthe. The Countess Bathory and her husband took part in black magic and demonic rituals.

The Count Nadasdy often left the castle to go to war. It was at these times Elisabeth had lesbian orgies mixed with sado-masochism.

Elisabeth was at her middle age when her husband had died. One day she struck one of her servants for carelessness. blood lay on her hand which gave it a youthful appearance. The Countess then thought that blood made her look younger so she took to killing girls. At her castle she had dungeons where girls were kept and being fattened up for blood, she also had people kidnapping girls and taking them back to the castle where they were killed. Elisabeth Bathory believed herself to be a vampire, by this she drank blood and bathed in it.

Over the years the Countess and her associates killed over 600 girls, all of which were used for their blood. The villagers were aware but could not act upon it as she had powerful friends. Prime Minister Thurzo of Hungary who was a cousin of the Countess decided to do something and stormed the castle with soldiers to arrest the Countess and her associates. They were amazed at what they saw in the castle, such torture practices that were far more gruesome than the usual, dead corpses filled the castle.

Countess Bathory and her associates were arrested. All but the Countess were sentenced to death. The Countess herself was put into a sealed room with small spaces for ventilation and the passing of food. She died on the 21 August 1614 at the age of fifty-four. It is said that the Countess' life story inspired Bram Stoker to write 'Dracula'.

Most Evil Men In History - Tomás de Torquemada

He was an excellent precursor to Adolf Hitler. The Pope agreed to allow the Inquisition in 1481, and those arrested and given four choices. They could confess, pay a penalty, endure public torture, or be burned at the stake. Quite often, those arrested were subjected to all of the above. Torquemada's own grandmother was a converso, but he continued to elevate the level of his Inquisition to that of an ethnic cleansing or a full-blown massacre.

mportant to the religiously-motivated Inquisitors was that "no blood be spilt," which meant the act torturing confessions out of people required a special science. The favored techniques were flogging, the rack, and red coals applied to the feet. Also popular at the time was the strappado, in which you're suspended by the wrists and incrementally heavier weights are wrapped around your ankles or looped among your toes.

Laying a framework of paranoia were Secret Accusers, people who'd tell on their neighbors or exact revenge against those they carried a grudge. Denying heresy meant torture, and confession led to death. Honesty did not pay during Torquemada's Inquisition, and no lawyer could assist you.

Papal degrees provided a loophole: torture could not be repeated, but it could be continued. Burning at the stake was performed publicly as an auto-da-fé, or act of faith. If the condemned kissed the Holy Cross, they were garroted before the fire was set. If they merely apologized, they were burnt at the stake death with quick-burning Dura-logs. If the accused continued to be stubborn, they were incinerated with slow-burning fresh green wood. Anywhere from 13,000 to 50,000 people were killed, and the Sierra Club has yet to approach the Spanish government for reparations.

To Torquemada's credit, a large percentage of his victims were very wealthy. They were saddled with exhaustive fines, court costs, and jail time. Confinement decimated a significant portion of the upper class. Moneys traveled up the hierarchy of church officials.

Torquemada lived a long life surrounded by comfort before dying of natural causes at the age of 78.

Most Evil Men In History - Grigori Efimovich Rasputin

Grigory Rasputin is without question one of the most scandalous figures in Russian history. This randy mystic from Siberia arrived in St. Petersburg in 1911 and within a few years had become one of the most influential men in government circles. His ability to remain in such a high position despite widely publicized bouts of drinking and womanizing is no doubt the source of tremendous envy among political figures around the world today.

Rasputin's rise to preeminence was due to his close relationship with Nicholas II's wife, Alexandra. The heir to the throne, Alexis, suffered from hemophaelia, and only Rasputin could do what the top medical professors could not: he could stop the boy's bleeding. Because of this, Alexandra believed he was a holy man sent to protect Alexis and she kept him close by at all times, despite the fact that he rarely bathed.

Rasputin is as famous for his death as he is for his life. At the end of 1916, a group of aristocrats in cahoots with the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich (a cousin of Nicholas II) decided that Rasputin's influence had grown too great and that he had to be killed in order to save Russia. They lured him to the Yusupovsky Palace on the pretext that Prince Felix Yusupovsky would introduce Rasputin to his beautiful wife.

Rasputin was led to the cellar and fed poisoned cakes and wine, but these did affect him. Yusupovsky then shot the monk at point blank range and Rasputin collapsed on the floor. When Yusupov went to tell his fellow conspirators the good news, they sent him back to make sure he had done the job. On returning to inspect the body, Rasputin suddenly regained consciousness and started to throttle poor Yusupov, who needless to say was completely scared out of his wits. The Prince fled the cellar, screaming for help; when they returned Rasputin was gone. They found him in the yard crawling towards the gate and proceeded to shoot and bludgeon him. They then bound him and tossed him into the river. When Rasputin's body was found, his bonds were broken and his lungs were filled with water, showing that he didn't actually die until he was submerged in the frozen waters.

This documentary is in four parts, covering Origins, Corporation, Frontier and Legend. Origins cover how the Templars came about. They do not mention Hugh de Payne or the original group who are credited with the founding of the Templars, but does pick up from the time of the First Crusades, and does cover the circumstances of why a military order was needed, and how the Order was finally acknowledged and accepted.
Corporation is much more interesting, showing how much of an important part the Templars played in the construction of the financial basis for that time period in history. The foundation of the Templar finances is examined and clearly laid out. This is necessary in order to understand what finally happens to them.
Frontier lays the basis for the fall of the Holy Land and the effects it had on the Templars. Reinforced and secure, they lose their ground to the Mamluks. The power struggle plays out, the Holy Land is finally lost to the Crusaders, and the Templars move back into Europe to find they are financially secure, but have no reason now for existence.
The final installment, Legend, examines the fall of the Templars. Their financial holdings appealed to a failing monarchy, they become the target for the financially strapped French King, and are arrested, tortured, tried and burned.

March of the Penguins

March of the Penguins (French: La Marche de l'empereur; literally The Emperor's March) is a commercially and critically successful French nature documentary film which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It was directed and co-written by Luc Jacquet, and co-produced by Bonne Pioche and the National Geographic Society.

The film depicts the yearly journeys of the emperor penguins of Antarctica. In autumn, all the penguins of breeding age (five years old and over) leave the ocean, their normal habitat, to walk inland to their ancestral breeding grounds. There, the penguins participate in a courtship that, if successful, results in the hatching of a chick. For the chick to survive, both parents must make multiple arduous journeys between the ocean and the breeding grounds over the ensuing months.

It took one year to shoot the movie, which was filmed around the French scientific base of Dumont d'Urville in Adélie Land

Abbas trained many of those behind the 2002 Bali bomb and is the brother-in-law of its key planner - although Abbas profoundly disagrees with the operation that killed so many civilians.
He also trained many leading terrorists in the Philippines. It was there, too, that he met jihadis from overseas, including the UK.
Intelligence agencies from overseas are now beating a path to his door.
Today, he not only provides the authorities with intelligence on his former comrades, but also talks to them after they have been arrested and tries to convince them that they followed the wrong path... in the hope that they will change sides too.

In San Francisco, violent earthquakes have historically been downplayed by the city’s landowners. After the 1868 Hayward (7.0) and the 1906 San Francisco (7.8) earthquakes devastated the Bay Area, investigations that starkly illustrated the dangers of another large earthquake were suppressed and, in one case, investigation documents were actually destroyed. In another large event, the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge - the most-used bridge in America - would likely see its upper-deck collapse (as partially happened in the quake of 1989), and perhaps the entire eastern section of the bridge as well. The US Department of the Interior estimates that the dead and injured could number over 100,000. Today, another event is both inevitable and ill-prepared for. Can scientists and concerned citizens beat the geologic time-clock before the next big one?
In 2002, German cannibal Armin Meiwes was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to over eight years in prison for killing, dismembering and eating another man - who allegedly agreed to the arrangement over the internet. In 2005, a German court ordered a retrial and Meiwes was eventually convicted of murder. Hitler’s Family - In the Shadow of the Dictator

Adolf Hitler consistently hushed up or denied his family lineage for fear that his ragtag bunch of ancestors and relatives could tarnish his reputation or expose his imperfect Aryan background. His family had a history of psychiatric disorders, and his second cousin, Aloisia Veit, was locked up in an asylum for nine before being sent to the gas chambers for being “unworthy of life”.

Hitler was embarrassed by his sister Paula, and made her live under the assumed name of Paula Wolf. Paula became engaged to Dr Erwin Jekelius, medical director of the asylum who sent hundreds of mentally ill patients, including Aloisia Veit, to their deaths

Cuba's music is at the core of its national identity and for the past seven years, it has also been at the heart of an international legal battle.

When Buena Vista Social Club became a huge global hit, Cubans thought they could cash in and make money from their old music.

But as soon as their re-releases hit the shops Peer music - the largest privately owned American music publishing company - took the Cubans to court. They claimed that their founder Ralph Peer had bought the rights to the very same songs way before the Cuban revolution back in the 1930s.

This is the story of the fight for Cuban music between the Cuban state music company and America's Peer Music.

Leslie Woodhead has been making documentaries since the early 1960s, and he is one of the masters of the British art of empiricism. How did he ever get so close to subjects as diverse as murderous Serbs, primitive African peoples and East German rock stars? Well, he gives you the answer in this film.

Growing up in Halifax Leslie loved to spy on people through the high window of his parents’ house that overlooked the market place. More important, he became a real spy of sorts - when he did his National Service he was inducted into a select group of people whose privilege it was to learn Russian and sit up late at night listening to meaningless messages from one young Soviet pilot to another.

Leslie’s film is a charming, ironic recollection of a lost portion of the Cold War - I’ll leave you to figure out the twists and turns of his story.

The Knights Templar

History Documentary - The Knights Templar


This documentary is in four parts, covering Origins, Corporation, Frontier and Legend. Origins cover how the Templars came about. They do not mention Hugh de Payne or the original group who are credited with the founding of the Templars, but does pick up from the time of the First Crusades, and does cover the circumstances of why a military order was needed, and how the Order was finally acknowledged and accepted.
Corporation is much more interesting, showing how much of an important part the Templars played in the construction of the financial basis for that time period in history. The foundation of the Templar finances is examined and clearly laid out. This is necessary in order to understand what finally happens to them.
Frontier lays the basis for the fall of the Holy Land and the effects it had on the Templars. Reinforced and secure, they lose their ground to the Mamluks. The power struggle plays out, the Holy Land is finally lost to the Crusaders, and the Templars move back into Europe to find they are financially secure, but have no reason now for existence.
The final installment, Legend, examines the fall of the Templars. Their financial holdings appealed to a failing monarchy, they become the target for the financially strapped French King, and are arrested, tortured, tried and burned.

1. San Francisco
In San Francisco, violent earthquakes have historically been downplayed by the city's landowners. After the 1868 Hayward (7.0) and the 1906 San Francisco (7.8) earthquakes devastated the Bay Area, investigations that starkly illustrated the dangers of another large earthquake were suppressed and, in one case, investigation documents were actually destroyed. In another large event, the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge - the most-used bridge in America - would likely see its upper-deck collapse (as partially happened in the quake of 1989), and perhaps the entire eastern section of the bridge as well. The US Department of the Interior estimates that the dead and injured could number over 100,000. Today, another event is both inevitable and ill-prepared for. American Gangster
American Gangster is the story of Frank Lucas and Leroy "Nicky" Barnes - their rise from street punks to the top of New York's 1970's high-flying drug market. The two men were considered the drug czars of Harlem at the height of the drug-fueled decade. Lucas and his gang "The Country Boys" claim to have smuggled heroin from Asia in the caskets of fallen American soldiers. Barnes, the leader of a cartel of African-American drug dealers called "The Council," made the cover of New York Times Magazine. The headline read "Mr. Untouchable." President Carter was so incensed, he personally ordered the Attorney General to go after him. The story is a violent, action-filled chronicle of Harlem and its kingpins.

Kings of New York
King Lil Man," was found decapitated, dismembered, and burned in a bathtub. His Latin King's tattoo had been cut from his skin, his head and hands were never found. According to former Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Zabel, his murderers, fellow Latin King gang members, were "...actually driving around town in a cab with his head because "King Blood," their leader, needed proof of the murder." By the mid-1990's, the New York chapter of the Latin Kings had grown into the most violent and largest street gang every seen in the city. Lead by the murderous "King Blood," they left a path of mayhem that was only brought to an end by "Blood's" 18 guilty verdicts - eight of them for murder. In 2003, the body of a pregnant, teenaged informant was found along the banks of the bucolic Shenandoah River. She'd been repeatedly stabbed - her head nearly severed. Nuestra Familia. As the predominant Hispanic gang in Northern California, Nuestra Familia, or NF is primarily a prison gang. Compared to other prison gangs, NF's numbers on the inside are relatively small, yet they distinguish themselves through discipline and fear. They have adopted the battle cry "blood in, blood out," and made their rules official, scribing a 50-page constitution laying out their bylaws. Among them, "an automatic death sentence will be put on family member that turns traitor, coward or deserter. " NF also have tens of thousands of loyal followers on the streets known as Nortenos or Northerners. The main rival of NF has always been the Mexican Mafia, with their followers being the Surenos or Southerners.

BBC - TRIALS OF LIFE - David Attenborough 1990

The Trials of Life is a BBC (in conjunction with The Australian Broadcasting Service and Turner Broadcasting System Inc.) natural history television series of twelve episodes, about animal behaviour, written and presented by David Attenborough, originally transmitted in October 1990

The series took over three and a half years to make, during which time Attenborough travelled almost a quarter of a million miles.

Each episode was just under 50 minutes long, recorded in 4:3 aspect ratio with stereo sound.

There was an accompanying book, and the series is available as a four-disc DVD set (erroneously entitled Trials of Life) with an extra, 50-minute feature: "The Making of The Trials of Life". A similarly titled three-disc set has also been released, with each episode cut to around 25 minutes. The former is included in The Life Collection box set.

Part of David Attenborough's 'Life' series, it was preceded by The Living Planet (1984) and followed by Life in the Freezer (1993).

1. "Arriving"
Birth is the first dangerous step into a hazardous world. The vast majority of newborns are consumed by other creatures who are struggling to compete in the perpetual game of life. Egg-laying animals, live-bearing, pregnant males, body snatching wasps — the strategies are diverse, but the aim is simple: to launch progeny into the world with a good chance of progress on the road to becoming parents.
2. "Growing Up"
Attenborough says, "The task of gaining size and strength sufficient to survive unaided is the main task of childhood." From abandoned babies to those cared for by generations of family, like elephants, communal nurseries and synchronized birthing seasons, the responsibilities of child care and teaching of the young shows again that growing up in the natural world is a complex and hazardous business.
3. "Finding Food"
Finding food, and avoiding becoming food to other organisms, is a problem every animal faces. The vital quest opens up a complex world of intrigue and cunning, of ploy and counter-ploy. Animals can avoid becoming someone's dinner by running or hiding. Plants, without these defences, have developed surprising ways to protect themselves.

4. "Hunting and Escaping"
Life and death duels are the daily routine of life in the wild. The desperate battles between assassins and their victims have fuelled an evolutionary arms race resulting in an art of pursuit and evasion. All confrontations end in one of two ways: the predator goes hungry or the prey loses its life. Every conceivable stratagem is needed by both the hunter and the hunted: traps and baits, warnings and deceptions, brute force and sheer speed. This episode contains the famous scene of a killer whale capturing, killing, and eating a sea lion pup.
5. "Living Together"
Committed by evolution to live together, animal partnerships are widespread in the natural world. Some of these relationships between species are ancient and intimate. All reflect a balance of benefit and exploitation. A Gaby acts as look-out for a shrimp, which is almost blind. Ferocious Australian ants milk a certain caterpillar, and like good farmers, return it to shelter at night. Some microscopic parasites perform beneficial cleaning services for their nourishment.
6. "Homemaking"
At some time in their lives, if not throughout them, animals need homes. To accomplish this, they have become potters and plasterers, weavers and needle workers, miners, masons, thatchers and sculptors. Like humans, they worry about the costs of home repair, deterring unwanted guests and keeping the weather out. Prairie dogs reduce the stuffiness of their burrows with a built-in air conditioning system.

7. "Finding the Way"
Animals journey around the globe with amazing accuracy... one that we have only matched with satellite navigation. Each year, Arctic terns leave their nests 600 miles from the North Pole and migrate 12,000 miles. Then they return to nest within inches of their old homes. In the middle of the Sahara's Great Sand Sea, a tiny ant uses the sun as a compass to find its way in a featureless environment.
8. "Fighting"
Whether to win food, to claim or hold a plot of territory, to capture a mate, fighting is accepted practice in the wild. Deciding whether to fight or flee depends on costs and rewards. Animals assess their own abilities against the potential damage of teeth, hooves and horns on the opponent. Then they fight with intensity proportioned to what they stand to gain or lose. However, all disputes do not have to end in violence.
9. "Friends and Rivals"
Many animals find it advantageous to live in groups, and their communities work more efficiently if they have some form of social structure. Inevitable squabbles over food, nesting places, arguments over mates must be settled with a minimum expenditure of time and energy. True socialites, the vampire bats not only scratch one another's backs, but also share each other's meals. The leaf-cutting ant colony is like a single superorganism.

10. "Talking to Strangers"
The ways animals communicate to each other. Most use ripples in the air but the sea is also full of sound of animals communicating. The loudest of all sounds in nature is made by blue whales, who can sing to each other on opposite sides of the ocean. Competing male frogs in Panama make so much noise, they have a special system to avoid jamming each other's signals.
11. "Courting"
Nightingales and whales sing. Hamsters and moose lay perfumed messages. Visual splendour is hardly of value when it comes to raising a family, yet female birds often select their partners on this basis. For other animals, the way they dance is crucial. Some males forego charm and resort to violent tactics to attract a partner. Harlequin beetles hurl one another off trees. Topi antelope clash horns in bitter struggles.
12. "Continuing the Line"
When it comes to sex, there are no fixed rules in the animal world. The barnacle is the most well-endowed of all males, but it is also a female. Some species start out as females and later become males. Palolo worms indulge in mass orgies on one special night of the year.
