Asteroids deadly impact, National Geographics

Those who like to keep their eyes on the sky will appreciate this documentary, which follows geologist Eugene Shoemaker, who as the chief lunar scientist for NASA, trained the astronauts before the moon landings at the nearly mile-wide Meteor Crater near Flagstaff, Arizona. With his wife Carolyn, and collaborator David Levy, Shoemaker discovered Shoemaker-Levy 9, in March of 1993, the meteor that impacted with Jupiter in July of '94, and was so well recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope. Shoemaker likens meteors to "space bullets," and gives us with his riffle, a miniature version of what happens upon impact. Shoemaker has discovered hundreds of asteroids and comets, and "helped transform the map of the sky," and also has an immensely likable personality, making this film enjoyable as well as educational.

Also interviewed are David Morrison of NASA, who claims "if it happened to the dinosaurs it can happen to us," and astronaut/geologist Dr. Jack Schmitt. There's a scene where Eugene and Carolyn visit the Ries Basin in Germany, where the town of Nordlinger is built within a crater, and marvel at the "large geologic sample," St. George's Cathedral, built with local stone that includes melted glass, the result of asteroidal impact. Other craters described are in Tunguska, Siberia, where in 1908 the trees were flattened for miles, and the Chicxulub crater within the peninsula of Yucatan, which occurred 65 million years ago, and coincides with the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Another reason to enjoy this documentary is its narration, by composer, actor and guitarist extraordinaire Robbie Robertson, whose mellow, beautiful voice is music to my ears. Very well written and directed by Eitan Weinreich, with a good score by Mark Adler, the total running time is 60 minutes.

Black Wallstreet

Black Wallstreet was the most affluent African American community and business district in United States History. At the turn of the last century, Tulsa’s black community was thriving with highly successful businesses. Approximately ten black millionaires lived there. Six had private airplanes in 1921. There were affluent black doctors, lawyers, educators, entrepreneurs and oilmen. Over 600 booming businesses literally flourished during this very troubling period in American history. Then “America’s Most Affluent Black Community Was Bombed From The Air in 1921! Why?”

After 14 years of research and investigation and the incredible success of their first book, “Black Wallstreet” A Lost Dream,” Black Wallstreet Author Jay Jay Wilson and Ron Wallace uncovered one of the most Cynical Masterplans against African Americans since slavery” The systematic destruction and halting of “The Most Prolific Black Economic Movement” in American History.

After slavery, hundreds of thousands of Black and Native Americans were forced by the American Government to migrate into the Mid West, which was called Indian Territory. They began setting up small, independent little townships throughout the area. Once they began settling the land, the Government began Phase II of their Masterplan. They then named it “The Oklahoma Territory,” which paved the way to bring in white settlers from all over the south to migrate there; most importantly - bringing with them southern culture and their hatred for blacks with them. The “Great Land Rush” of the late 1800”s was Phase III of their very complex Masterplan. The Government then opened up the land; giving all the land that one could settle - to anyone!

During the late 1800”s oil was discovered in Oklahoma, soon after declaring it “The Oil Capital of the World.” Ironically, the very same land that the government forced Black and Native Americans to migrate to ended up being the most oil-rich land in the country and made millionaires and very wealthy landowners out of those very same Black and Native Americans!

The Government now had to do something about this dilemma. So, in 1907 Oklahoma became a “State of the Union” and laid the groundwork for them to take total control over the entire territory. Blacks were forced into North Tulsa, and Native Americans were forced out of the area and onto reservations.

Blacks built a small northern section of Tulsa into the most prolific Black Community and Business Model in the history of America. In a mere 36-square block area of Tulsa, there were black doctors, lawyers, oilmen, entrepreneurs and over 600 booming businesses. There were restaurants, nightclubs, hotels, a bank, schools, churches, general stores, beauty salons and numerous highly successful businesses.

The Secret History of Genghis Khan, BBC Timewatch

tampeding horses, missing money and burning vodka - it's all in a day's work when you are shooting the life and times of Genghis Khan, writes Timewatch director Heinz Leger.

'It's all real and without cheap tricks,' said Heinz Leger, director for the Austrian broadcaster ORF, who filmed the drama for 'Timewatch: The Secret History of Genghis Khan'.

'I avoided any of the computer animation that is so en vogue. Even in the mass scenes each horseman is flesh and blood. I was not so much concerned with the precise sequence of battles and conquests, but more with the personal development of the man, Genghis Khan.'

The programme is based on 'The Secret History of the Mongols', a manuscript written in the 13th century, some believe by the adopted son of the great Khan.

The Secret History of the Mongols, said to have been written by Genghis Khan’s adopted son, reveals a very different man to the brutal butcher of Western legend. Not just a womanizer, but a devoted husband. Not just a warrior, but a politician. Not just a conqueror, but a legislator. A man who wanted the lessons he had learned – good and bad - to be passed on to his successors. Within its pages lies the 'inside story' of how an illiterate nomad inspired his successors to conquer the largest land empire the world had ever seen.

This program tells the story of this equally famous, notorious and enigmatic figure from new perspectives, through the eyes of his own people, past and present, as well as those of his enemies. We watch how the conqueror's rapid transformation into a shrewd statesman and ruler, turned a military machine into a political meritocracy. From his orphaned childhood in poverty to the valley of the Onon River to his secret burial we follow the life of Genghis Khan. It is an ancient story with a modern search for its traces.

Diamonds are symbols of wealth, elegance and love around the world. But in several African nations, they have been a means to power, a reason to terrorize millions of innocent civilians, and may have even helped finance some of the world's most brutal terrorists. The human cost of the illicit global diamond trade is examined in the provocative documentary.

Because they are portable, easily concealed, and untraceable, diamonds lend themselves to smuggling and corruption. In several underdeveloped African nations, warlords have used diamonds to help finance wars, while the rest of the world has turned a blind eye. Rebel armies have forced tens of thousands of people to mine diamonds in brutal, dangerous conditions under the threat of death, their pay as paltry as a cup of rice per day. In Sierra Leone, rebels chopped off people's hands, arms, feet, lips, and ears indiscriminately for years during a civil war financed in part by the trade of illicit diamonds.

One such victim is Usman Conteh. Captured by rebels in Sierra Leone's Kono district, Usman was forced to mine diamonds for rebels - diamonds the rebels then sold or traded for arms. After months in captivity, Usman escaped only to find rebels had murdered his family.

The documentary explores the factors that led to the violence, tells the vivid details of the suffering, and speaks with the organizations that eventually exposed the link between diamonds and several brutal African conflicts. Mysteries of the Gods (1976), super rare doc

Botschaft der Götter" or, as it is written in the international version, "The Mysteries of the Gods" is a full length documentary portraying the ancient astronaut theories of Swiss-born researcher Erich von Däniken. The film is hosted and narrated by no less than William Shatner himself.

Everything from the Peruvian Crystal Skull to the megalith structures in the jungles of Southeast Asia is accepted as evidence for the AAS theory. Cave drawings, old legends, Biblical stories and even some psychic visions of late Jeane Dixon are understood as stone cold facts. Eric von Däniken's reputation was still quite unspoiled at the time so all the arguments (even the most far-fetched) are shown with a great confidence.

William Shatner is–as usual–overacting his part. With all the strange "scientific" people, long shots, enthusiastic Shatner and eerie 70's synthesizer music this amazing documentary was from the day one destined to become a cult classic.

'1914-18' and 'The Great War,' which inspired 'The World at War' - but this Channel Four series is
the best ever. Unlike almost all of the others it gives you a look at the WORLD war aspect of it,
not just focusing on the Western Front or (like most poor US documentaries) on the last year
when America was involved, you also see the war in Russia, in Arabia, in Africa to get a real sense
of the scale. Unlike 1914-18 it takes a chronological look at the war, but does it in a riveting way:
the first episode plays like a thriller, while others are like tragedies. And it doesn't fall in for
clichés or easy targets. It dispels a lot of myths along the way (for example, did you know the
assassinated Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand was anti-militarist and had actually prevented war
breaking out several times? I didn't) and holds your attention throughout. And the haunting end
title music written by a composer who died in the war is unforgettable.
One of the greatest TV shows ever, it's a crime this is so little known and failed to win any major
awards. It's on DVD and if you've any interest in the subject at all, it's the only WW1 doc you
need to buy.

National Geographics - The Photographers

Going behind the camera and on assignment with veteran photographers for National Geographic, this documentary answers the eternal question asked by the magazine's readers: "How in the world did they get that shot?" The photographers recount the grueling preparation that shooting for the magazine entails, from mundane details such as obtaining visas to preparing oneself for dangers such as severe climates, deep-sea dives, raging beasts, and local bandits. And don't forget insects, lots and lots of insects, a point made pellucid as photographers in a fast montage rattle off how many times they've battled malaria. Besides the physical ordeals, there is also discussion of the emotional toll involved in shooting in brutal conditions, such as one photographer's recounting of how distressing it was to continue shooting pictures in the famine zone of the Horn of Africa. Beyond all the hardships, the travel to the world's farthest flung places involves considerable loneliness, but the photographers interviewed speak of having the "best job in the world," and their enthusiasm for the work is abundant. It goes without saying that this video is a visual delight, as many examples of noteworthy National Geographic photographs, and entertaining explanations of how the shot was set up and snapped, appear throughout.

History Channel - Barbarians

The period of history between the decline of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance known as the “Dark Ages” are an era of superstition, war, and death. For nearly a thousand years the rulers of various tribes across Europe and Asia arrive and decline as fast as a passing storm, but mold the structure of nations to come. The upcoming History Channel Original Special “Barbarians” focuses on four specific groups of people who create brief, but influential empires that are still studied not only by historians, but also by modern day politicians and military leaders today. In night one we are introduced to the Vikings and the Goths. The Vikings begin their conquests with technologically superior ships that can be built within a month to six weeks and with small modifications can be used in shallow waters and rivers as well as oceans while their contemporaries could barely travel around the coastlines. The Vikings under Leif Eriksson are the first Europeans to set foot on American soil centuries before Columbus and the Vikings also greatly change the face of Europe with the conquest of England from their Norsemen settlements in France to become known as the “Normans” in 1066AD.

The Vikings
The Vikings originated as a relatively peaceful people, eking out a living on the less-than-ideal farmland of Scandinavia. As their population grew, competition over scarce resources led to fighting amongst the various Viking families. It was their great invention, the lightning-fast longship that gave them the chance to broaden their horizons and project their terror, destruction, and plundering across the entire civilized world. Every ocean and river was a highway for the Vikings to further exploration and opportunities for mayhem; at their height they projected their unique brand of sea power from Northern Europe, through the Mediterranean and North Africa, to such far-flung places as Kiev and Baghdad. They even became the first Europeans to reach North America, beating Columbus by nearly 500 years.

The Goths
They had little to do with excessive eyeliner or fringe heavy metal music. Instead, this originally peaceful people fled oppression by the Huns and sought refuge in the friendly arms of the Roman Empire. The Romans, not sure what to do with this massive influx of refugees, herded them into concentration camps. The Goths, starving by this time, were so desperate they were willing to sell themselves and their children into slavery for one meal of dog meat. Over time, many Goths found employment in the Roman legions, where they often served as cannon fodder (or whatever the appropriate pre-firearm term would be), in the process becoming battle-hardened, well-trained troops with the best that Roman strategy and equipment had to offer. Having that many desperately hungry Goths with military experience around turned out to be an explosive combination; under their leader Aleric, the Goths in 410 AD became the first foreign power to sack Rome since before the time of Julius Caesar. They went on to form their own empire, the Visigoth Empire, in Spain and Southern France, which lasted until 711 AD.

The Huns
Hot on the heels of the Goths, the Huns emerged to vex the fraying remains of the Roman Empire in the fifth century AD. The origins of the Huns are a bit mysterious, but it seems that they originated in Asia and were driven out by the Chinese and the Mongols, eventually coming to live on land they won from the Romans, known as Hungary. Under the leadership of the legendary ruler Attila they were transformed from nomadic refugees into an empire that would rival their Roman neighbors to the south. They came within in an inch of conquering the Eternal City, but never quite made it there. After the death of Attila, their empire disintegrated into a number of factions headed by various and sundry heirs. Still, their impact on European civilization is unquestionable; they eroded the power of the Roman Empire and then disintegrated, leaving a void into which the Catholic Church stepped for about 800 years.

World War II: The Lost Color Archives

In the 1980s determined researchers began scouring the world for color film shot during World War II, and the result of their quest is spectacular. Seeing the war through the ubiquitous black-and-white footage has always made the experience somewhat distant, but in clear, crisp color, the enormity of the war and its horrors is startling and dramatic. Films of Nazi rallies are all the more disturbing; a viewer seeing the scene in color realizes the massive crowds saluting Hitler are no longer gray and faceless masses, but gatherings of well- dressed civilians. Color combat footage, from across Europe and the Pacific, is frighteningly immediate, and some of it, showing the wounded, the dead, and even prisoners being executed, will no doubt be disturbing for many viewers. Violence and destruction on an unimaginable scale is vividly put on display, as are smaller moments of soldiers smiling for the camera or liberated prisoners from the concentration camps staring in pained bewilderment. The episodes, produced by the History Channel, are introduced by veteran journalist Roger Mudd, and the narration for each individual segment typically contains excerpts from letters and diaries describing events close to those depicted in the film footage. The footage used is of a surprisingly high quality (much of it was shot and stored away, virtually unseen for decades), and it provides a stunning look at how the war appeared to those fighting it.

The Antichrist Conspiracy is made by British film director CHRIS EVERARD. Another important part of this film shows a Chinese government minister appearing on the BBC’s QUESTION TIME programme - the minister is challenged about the policy of torture and genocide in Tibet - again the minister stares into space, talks not to the interviewer but as if reciting a message pre-programmed into his brain - another clear sign of brain washing.

Perhaps the most important sequence shows Bill Clinton in a semi-trance state repeating the same message on TV cameras over and over again. Whilst make-up people tend to his clothes, Bill Clinton sits motionless, unblinking, staring into empty space - this is what Psy-Ops specialists call 'Park Mode'.

Comandante

Comandante is a political documentary film by American director Oliver Stone. In the film, Stone interviews Cuban leader Fidel Castro on a diverse range of topics. Stone and his film crew visited Castro in Cuba for three days in 2002, and the film was released in 2003, having its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival early that year. This film was not released to theatres in the US due to pressure from anti-Castro Cuban Americans.

Comandante was followed in 2004 by another documentary, entitled Looking for Fidel, which includes interviews of Castro in the wake of 2003 crackdown on political dissidents in Cuba, as well as interviews of some of the dissidents and Cuban human rights advocates.

Darwin's Nightmare, Nominated for Oscar

A documentary on the effect of fishing the Nile perch in Tanzania's Lake Victoria. The predatory fish, which has wiped out the native species, is sold in European supermarkets, while starving Tanzanian families have to make do with the leftovers. The larger scope of the story explores the gun trade to Africa that takes place under the covers -- Russian pilots fly guns into Africa, then fly fish back out to Europe. The hazards and consequences of this trade are explored, including the pan-African violence propagated by constant flow of weapons into the continent. If it is a "survival of the fittest" world, as Darwin concluded, then the capitalist interests that fund the gun runners are climbing the evolutionary ladder on the backs of the Africans in this stark Darwinian example. Much like the foreseeable extinction of the Lake Victoria perch, and death of Lake Victoria itself, the Africans are in grave jeopardy, even as they survive in the only ways they know how.

Equinox: Psycopath

According to popular wisdom, psychopaths are crazed and bloodthirsty serial killers. The reality is not so simple. While many psychopaths do commit violent crimes, not all psychopaths are criminals and not all criminals are psychopathic. Psychopaths are found in many walks of life and are often successful in competitive professions. However they are also ruthless, manipulative and destructive. Equinox reports on techniques developed by psychologists to work out whether a person is psychopathic and shows how brain scientists are coming close to mapping the malfunctions in the brain that cause a person to be a psychopath.

In Britain one person in 200 is likely to be a psychopath. However psychopaths are thought to be responsible for half of all reported crimes and to make up between 15% and 20% of the prison population. The programme looks at the most recent research into the brains and behaviour of psychopaths and assesses the prospects for the treatment or containment of this antisocial group of people who create such a disproportionate amount of destruction.

Psychopaths who have been convicted of appalling crimes explain with disturbing clarity what motivated them in their violent and destructive behaviour. They speak without shame, guilt, remorse or empathy with their victims. Though they are articulate and, at times, plausible and charming, they lack the range of emotions experienced by the rest of society. They know the difference between right and wrong but they do not feel it.

Robert Hare, Professor of Psychology at the University of Vancouver, has devised a system of assessment called the Psychopathy Checklist. In specialised interviews, psychologists assess individuals on a scale of 0 to 40 for a series of character traits, including callousness, superficial charm, lack of empathy and many others (for more detail look at How to recognise a psychopath). Anyone whose score is greater than 26 is diagnosed as psychopathic.

The Man Who Predicted 9/11

In 2001, Rick Rescorla was the 62-year-old head of security at the Morgan Stanley Bank situated high up in the South Tower at the World Trade Center. Rescorla was convinced that Osama Bin Laden would use jet planes to try and destroy the World Trade Center. Long before September 11th, he developed an evacuation plan for the bank, hugely unpopular amongst the city whiz kids who worked there who thought he was mad. His evacuation plan however ultimately saved 3,000 of their lives. Rescorla's plan was put into effect after the first jet hit the North Tower--even though WTC managers were instructing everyone to stay in the buildings. When the second jet hit the South Tower, he averted panic and organized a rapid evacuation. Rescorla went back inside to help those injured and trapped get out. He was still inside when the building collapsed. His body was never found.

National Geographic - Living in a Perfect World

The Mennonites are a group of Christian Anabaptist denominations named after and influenced by the teachings and tradition of Menno Simons (1496-1561). As one of the historic peace churches, Mennonites are committed to nonviolence, nonviolent resistance/reconciliation, and pacifism.

There are about 1.5 million Mennonites worldwide as of 2006. Mennonite congregations worldwide embody the full scope of Mennonite practice from old fashioned 'plain' people to those who are indistinguishable in dress and appearance from the general population. With a few notable exceptions, Mennonite experience in Europe and North America has been, and continues to be, predominantly rural. The largest population of Mennonites is in Africa, but Mennonites can also be found in tight-knit communities in at least 51 countries on six continents or scattered amongst the populace of those countries.

After immigration to America, many of the early Mennonites split from the main body of North American Mennonites and formed their own separate and distinct churches, a process that began in 1785 with the formation of the orthodox Reformed Mennonite Church and is ongoing today. Many of these churches were formed as a response to deep disagreements about theology, doctrine, and church discipline as evolution both inside and outside the Mennonite faith occurred. Many of the 'modern' churches descended from those groups that abandoned traditional Mennonite practices. Today, the groups that have held to the traditional interpretations of Mennonite doctrine are increasing at a more rapid rate than those groups that have rejected these standards. However, the moderate denominations are still by far the largest and continue to grow at a steady rate.

Daniel Pearl and Omar Sheikh were both highly educated individuals from privileged backgrounds who saw the world very differently. Pearl was a humanist who became an accomplished journalist and spent most of his career reporting from the Muslim world as part of a quest to promote cross-cultural understanding. Sheikh was radicalized by events that he regarded as the global persecution of Muslims, and became an Islamic militant who chose a deeply violent method to achieve what he believed in. After 9/11, their paths crossed in Pakistan, with tragic consequences.

PBS Special - Terry Jones, The Story of 1

The story of the number one is the story of Western civilization. Terry Jones ("Monty Python's Flying Circus") goes on a humor-filled journey to recount the amazing tale behind the world's simplest number. Using computer graphics, "One" is brought to life, in all his various guises, in STORY OF 1. One's story reveals how celebrated civilizations in history were achieved, where our modern numbers came from and how the invention of zero changed the world forever - and saved us from having to use Roman numerals today.

How old is One? A precise answer is impossible, but a notched bone (called the Ishango bone) found in the Congo proves that he's been around for at least 20,000 years. His life really took off 6,000 years ago, when the Sumerians turned him into a cone-shaped token and then into the first-ever numeric character, invention that made arithmetic - and therefore city life - possible, providing the means to assess wealth, calculate profits and loss, and, perhaps most important, collect taxes.

A thousand years later in Egypt, time-traveler Jones witnesses the first use of "million," as well as the invention of formal measurement: Egyptians create their own version of one, the cubit. Without the cubit, some of the wonders of the world might have been ... a little less wonderful. STORY OF 1 gives the viewer a glimpse of how a cubit-challenged pyramid would look.

Then it's on to ancient Greece, where One was held in high regard. However, his biggest fan, Pythagoras, lost his mind studying him, and the renowned Archimedes was so absorbed in diagrams that he lost his life to an invading Roman. The Romans slew One, too; they had no time for theoretical mathematics. In his new incarnation, "I" became a tool for imposing order.

Unwieldy though they were, Roman numerals would dominate Europe for the next 2,000 years. Jones discovers how the numbers we use today eventually managed to supplant them, making it much easier for us to subtract MDCCLVIII from MDCCCXLIV. It all begins in India, where the symbols for one through nine were invented and where Jones tracks down the first use of "zero." Here, STORY OF 1 takes a romantic turn. In Zero, One found his perfect mate. It was a union that would change the world.

Then it's on to Baghdad, where Jones discovers that Muslem scholars were smitten with One and Zero - and two through nine as well. The most famous Muslim scholar, Al-Khwarizmi, and his colleagues taught these performing numerals a whole set of new tricks, feats that enabled science, mathematics and astronomy to reach new heights in the Middle East.

The Indian numbers were a smash hit across the Islamic world before they were finally brought to Europe, where they met fierce resistance. It took 500 years for the battle between Roman and Indian numbers to play out, but by the 16th century, the Indian figures, now commonly called Arabic numerals, finally triumphed - perhaps because Florentine mathematician Fibonacci showed Christian merchants how useful Indian numerals could be, for instance, for calculating profits.

But the story doesn't end there. Within a hundred years, German mathematician Gottfried Leibniz invented a binary system, using the Adam and Eve of mathematics, One and Zero. Since then, as the language of computers, this two-digit binary system has come to dominate every part of modern life.

Holocaust - The Liberation of Auschwitz

Warning: This historical documentary contains some explicit scenes that are of a violent and disturbing nature.
Only 18 minutes of this footage has ever been shown before in the west. This was released by the Russians as prosecution evidence at the Nuremberg War Crime trials. Captain Alexander Vrotsos is the only surviving cameraman from the Soviet film crew attached to the 1st Ukrainian Front, who in Jan/Feb 1945 filmed the liberation of the infamous death camp, Auschwitz. He describes the feelings that he and his comrades felt at the horrific scenes that confronted the brave liberators. A majority of the prisoners had been forced by the Germans to leave the camp as the Red Army approached Auschwitz, and many had perished on their 'death marches'. Vorontsov was able to record the plight of the remaining 6000 prisoners, the pitiful remains of the dead, the results of the Soviet investigations and the closing of Auschwitz, February 28th 1945

Bangkok Girl

Bangkok Girl is the debut documentary from Canadian filmmaker Jordan Clark. While visiting in Bangkok a few years back, Clark quickly became enchanted with Thailand's exotic culture and fine-looking populace. However, he was also disturbed by the preponderance of Thai women who were forced to work as prostitutes, largely due to the lack of legitimate employment. In an attempt to better understand the foreigners who reveled in their defilement of these young girls, and the girls who allowed themselves to be defiled, Clark took his camera to some of the popular spots in Bangkok's seedy red-light district.

In the midst of his research, Clark met Pla, a 19-year-old bar girl. Throughout this brief documentary, Pla serves as his guide through Bangkok. Initially she shows off the city's modern-looking railway system and a well-maintained public park. However, Clark does not seem very interested in Bangkok's infrastructure. He keeps his camera focused on the plucky and somewhat affected young lady. As Clark notes early on—in a languid voiceover—Pla's affable demeanor might all be an act. Indeed, one of the documentary's most intriguing aspects lies in trying to glean what horrors lie underneath Pla's seemingly carefree continence.

Though all her female co-workers seem to be for sale, Pla insists not she does not take part in the sex trade. And though her denials defied common sense, I was still tempted to believe her, and was sadly disappointed when she went on a two-day foray with a foreign customer. Clark does an effective job helping us understand the larger context of Pla's situation, explaining how she has virtually no other opportunity to make money outside of selling herself. However, an increased understanding of Pla's situation does nothing to diminish the sorrow her situation inspires. In fact, Clark's interviews—one with a loutish Brit, another with an assertive transsexual—enhance our feelings of despondency.

The Up Series

The Up Series consists of a series of documentary films that have followed the lives of fourteen British children since 1964, when they were seven years old. The children were selected to represent the range of socio-economic backgrounds in Britain at that time, with the explicit assumption that each child's social class predetermines their future. Every seven years, the director, Michael Apted, films new material from as many of the fourteen as he can get to participate. The latest film, 49 Up, was released in September 2005; filming for the next instalment in the series, 56 Up, is expected in late 2011 or early 2012.

his Ancient Warriors series from the Discovery Channel is an excellent look at the warrior groups and armies that shaped history. Each half-hour episode looks at a major fighting people or force and charts the reasons for their rise to dominance and subsequent fall.
The warriors highlighted are: The Assyrians, Celts, Normans, Legions of Rome, Macedonians, Soldiers of the Pharaoh, Spartans, Janissaries, Huns, Knights Templar, Vikings, Highlanders, Irish Warriors, Maurya Warriors of the Elephant, Aztecs, Samurai, Shaolin Monks, Hawaiians, Ninja, Sioux.
There are 20 episodes and almost all include re-enactors hacking and slashing at each other with great abandon. Some are better than others but, overall, the series is first-rate.
The scripting is good, filled with interesting detail, and each programme follows one soldier and his life in the army. Not all of them end happily, it has to be said.

The Past The Other Nostradamus

He predicted World War II, the deaths of Presidents and the turmoil of the 1960s. He prophesied that Israel would become a state fifteen years before the event, and foretold the Great Depression. Many of his visions that seemed to pass unfulfilled are now being proven accurate.

The film follows Tesla's exploits and eccentricities, which made him a darling of the press. Included is the well-known and touching story of his devotion to a certain white pigeon. Largely forgotten today in spite of the great debt the modern world owes him, the film pays tribute to this overlooked genius.

Human cannibalism is steeped in controversy, a subject that both fascinates and repulses. Many anthropologists argue that cannibalism is an instinctive part of human nature - that it was an institution in many, if not all, ancient cultures; that people will turn to cannibalism without reservation in a survival situation; and that our very bones are imprinted with evidence that we are creatures who eat our own.

Other experts vehemently disagree, denying that cannibalism played a major role throughout history. They question eyewitness accounts and take issue with what archaeologists claim is hard scientific evidence. 'Cannibals' gets to the heart of the debate by investigating both well-known and little-known scenarios in which humans may have resorted to eating other humans.

The taboo of cannibalism has been with us for centuries. We explore early accounts of cannibalism, and how the reputed act and its practitioners were perceived by the Western world, and to what extent we can rely on historic sources as truth.

Though European explorers were quick to slap the cannibal label on peoples they encountered exploring the globe, we’ll reveal the extent to which they practiced their own form of medicinal cannibalism back home.

We investigate some of the most common motivations for cannibalism beginning with survival: in 1765 the crew of the Peggy draws lots to decide who shall be sacrificed to feed the rest. A century later, Sir John Franklin's entire expedition perishes in the arctic, but not before some resort to consuming human flesh. In 1883, Alfred Packer makes headlines worldwide when he is convicted of murdering and cannibalizing five of his companions on a Colorado gold-rush expedition turned winter survival catastrophe. Finally, we meet two of the survivors of the 1972 Andes plane crash who, with over twenty other passengers, are forced to consume the dead bodies of their friends in order to survive for over 70 days in the Andes Mountains in Argentina.

Infectious diseases are the greatest cause of illness and death in human history. Bacteria can make us deathly sick and often kill us. And just when we develop medicines to kill the germs, they do what they do best... mutate, find ways to resist our medicines. Now we are bombarded with products that promise to kill these germs. The number of new antibacterial products has tripled. But does the use of these products just make the germs even more resistant?

At the same time, the search for new microbial life has taken researchers from the lab to the ocean floor and to the heavens. A meteorite from Mars has fossilized structures on it that look suspiciously like small bacteria. Scientists are coming to the conclusion that life may be far more common in the universe than we had supposed. Anywhere that there is liquid water, there is a possibility of life, and, in fact, anywhere on Earth where there is liquid water, you find there is life. And so on worlds such as Mars or Europa where there may be hydrothermal features under the ice, the prospect of finding microbial life is very exciting.

Dr Vivian Davies claims that a recently discovered set of hieroglyphs proves that, in 800 BC, Egypt was under the rule of black Pharaohs from neighbouring Nubia. This film examines the impact of these sensational discoveries.

Historians have long known about Kush, but relegated its importance to a vassal state of Egypt, significant only for its gold reserves. Early excavations in the Kush capital at Kerma suffered from the innate racism of the archaeologists. Fabulous grave goods, discovered in the 20th century, were thought to have belonged to Kush’s Egyptian overlords. They didn’t consider that a black African culture could have challenged Egypt’s supremacy.

The inscription exposed the truth. Although it won battles, Kush eventually lost the war, and for the next 1000 years, Egypt had the upper hand. But the inscription served as a warning prophecy to Egypt that it might pay a high price. The enslaved Kushites would have their revenge. Allowed, and even encouraged, to rebuild their own kingdom along the lines of Egypt, in 747 BC, Kush attacked the Pharaoh’s power in a daring land grab.

The Kushite king, Piye, overthrew the yoke, conquered mighty Egypt and established a 100-year rule of black Pharaohs. Even after being ousted from the Egyptian throne, Kushite kings continued to rule an empire as mighty as any, until the arrival of Alexander the Great. For a number of years, British Museum archaeologists have been making find after find in the Upper Nile Valley to substantiate this story - huge lost pyramids, burial chambers of 200 workers, and stores of gold.

BBC Documentaries-The World at War, The definitive Documentary on World War II

The World at War" covers the entire history of World War II from the causes of the 1920s to the aftermath of the Cold War in the 1950s. Emphasis is also placed on several inside story episodes, where events are covered which occurred inside Germany and Japan such as resistance to Hitler, life in general under a dictatorial regime, and particular emphasis is focused on the Jewish Holocaust.

Producer Jeremy Isaacs asked a historian to list fifteen key campaigns of the war and devoted one episode to each. The remaining eleven episodes were devoted to other issues such as home life in Britain and Germany, the experience of occupation in The Netherlands, and the Nazis' use of genocide.

Hitler's Henchmen Himmler - The Executioner

Heinrich Luitpold Himmler was the commander of the German Schutzstaffel (SS) and one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany by being second in power to Adolf Hitler in the Nazi hierarchy.As Reichsführer-SS and the Einsatzgruppen death squads , Himmler held final command responsibility for annihilating tens of millions who were deemed unworthy to live. Before his death, Himmler was suspected of plotting against Hitler (July 20 Plot); in addition to offering to surrender all of Germany to the Allies only if he was spared from prosecution as a Nazi leader. Later on 1945, Himmler committed suicide with cyanide pill when he became a captive of the British army after Germany had lost World War II .

Promises (2001), Jewish / Palestinian Conflict

Several Jewish and Palestinian children are followed for three years and put in touch with each other, in this alternative look at the Jewish-Palestinian conflict. The three filmmakers followed a group of seven local children between 1995 and 1998. They all have a totally different background. These seven children tell their own story about growing up in Jerusalem. Through this portrait of their generation, we see how deep rooted and almost insoluble the problems of the Middle East have become. When the protagonists speak out in an epilogue a couple of years later, it becomes apparent that all have lost their childlike innocence.

Its being called the first animated film by Muslims to premiere in North America. 'Muhammad: The Last Prophet' aims to tell the story of Islam to a new generation of Muslims here and give Westerners a more positive depiction of the Middle East than the one they get on their nightly news.
Why should you see this film?: This film is both educational and entertaining! It introduces the main people and events that gave rise to the religion of Islam, the sister religion of the two Abrahamic faiths, Christianity and Judaism. This film is in an animated medium that is appealing and accessible to all ages, and can be an experience everyone can enjoy and share together

the Prophet Muhammad depicted in the film?: In Islam, representations of God and the prophets are prohibited. While the events surrounding the Prophet's life will be highlighted, the Prophet himself is never seen or heard. His representation is dealt with through sound and cinematography. We experience his story through point of view shots and through other people's interactions with him. In this sense, the film is similar to Mustapha Akkad's 1976 live-action film, "The Message."

Were Muslim scholars consulted in the making of the film?: A first draft of the movie script was sent to the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, before production began. The movie was approved on October 16th, 2002 by the Al-Azhar's Center for Islamic Research. The film was also approved by the Shi'ite Council of Lebanon. In North America, the producers formed a film consulting team that included scholars such as Dr. Khalid Abou El Fadl (UCLA), Ms. Firdosi Wharton-Ali (UCLA), Dr. John L. Esposito (Georgetown) and Dr. John S. Voll (Georgetown).
