Indigenous peoples apply body paint; whole villages dance. The film moves to destruction of nature via logging, blasting, and strip mining. Images of poverty, rapid urban life, and factories give way to war, concentration camps, and mass graves. Ancient ruins come into view, and then a sacred river where pilgrims bathe and funeral pyres burn. Prayer and nature return. A monk rings a huge bell; stars wheel across the sky.

Soviet espionage in US waters is equally aggressive: it is terrifying to imagine that stealthy, lethal submarines lurk off North America throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, their missiles targeted on our cities. These missions mark a new stage in the Cold War: the battle for intelligence. And nothing is more important than breaking the enemy’s cryptographic codes. The principle of cryptography is ancient, but during the Cold War it is at its most sophisticated. At its most basic, messages are encrypted by substituting one letter for another; a code machine mechanically de-scrambles the encrypted message. The doc talks about the current banking crisis and how the subprime loans caused most of it. The banks seem to have brought most of this on themselves.

Loose lending practices by banks that extend credit to people who are only marginally qualified and likely to default have been used to simply get people to take out the loans. The lending bank really doesn't care much about the integrity of the borrower because they sell the loan to another bank or private investor. The guy who issued the loan makes his commission, and the bank makes money when they sell the loan. Profits are being made, but losses eventually show up when people default on the loans.

Such practices can continue for a while, but eventually it catches up and that's what's going on now. There's been too much profiteering and not enough planing for the future. Now Governments are having to come in and bail out the banks. It's an unfortunate situation.

From the early 19th century 1946 Paris had many brothels that were tolerated and controlled by the state. These were sometimes rough places but more often were housed in richly designed buildings and serviced a clientèle from all walks of life. This documentary looks back at the Paris brothels through photographs, historians as well as memories from some who would frequent them as clients or work there as prostitutes.

Mark Kidel's astonishing film recaptures a lost French tradition. Nowadays it would simply be called sex tourism; but in the 1920s and 30s people did speak about brothels with awe. These were enormous facilities, often with a restaurant conveniently situated downstairs.

Many French women, including Edith Piaf serviced the clientele, which was rich and French, as well as rich and foreign. Of course there were cheaper brothels for working men.

George Orwell's remark that 1930s France was "midway between a museum and a brothel" turns out to have been literally true. But this is a wonderful film because it tells you about the French attitude. What other culture would have the courage or indifference to establish the sex trade at its heart?

Lakshmi Tatama is an Indian girl born in 2005 in a village in Araria district, Bihar, having “4 arms and 4 legs.” She was actually a pair of ischiopagus conjoined twins where one twin was headless due to its head atrophying and chest underdeveloping in the womb. The result looked like one child with four arms and four legs.
In her remote Indian village she is revered as a living god. With exclusive access, this film follows Lakshmi’s family on an epic emotional journey from their rural home to a hospital in Bangalore where her parents must decide whether to proceed with potentially life-threatening surgery to remove her extra limbs.

The Near-Baldock Hoard - Some hoards include a variety of precious objects arranged in a deliberate way: they form a ’structured deposit’. The Near-Baldock Hoard - found by metal-detectorist Alan Meek in a field in North Hertfordshire - is such a site, and comprised, from top to bottom: a 15cm silver figurine of a woman (badly corroded); two silver arms from a female figure, and a collection of gold jewellery (a pair of disc brooches, a pair of discs linked by a chain, and a gold clasp set with a red carnelian gemstone, engraved with a standing lion resting its paw on a bull’s head or ox skull); seven gold votive plaques; and 12 silver-alloy votive plaques, which were brittle and fragmentary.

The 80 Year Old Children (From India)

In March 2003 doctors at Calcutta’s Institute of Child Health made an astonishing and ground-breaking medical discovery. Quite by accident they had unearthed the only family in the world known to be struck by more than one case of progeria, a rare and incurable genetic disease. There are currently only 48 known cases worldwide, all of them isolated and seemingly random. But the doctors in Calcutta were faced with a mother who had given birth to five affected children.

Progeria is caused by a single tiny defect in a child’s genetic code, but it has devastating and life-changing consequences. On average, a child born with this disease will be dead by the age of 13. As they see their bodies fast forward through the normal process of ageing they develop striking physical symptoms, often including premature baldness, heart disease, thinning bones and arthritis.
The 80-Year-Old Children follows Dr Chattopadhyay who diagnosed the Khan children in 2003 as he returns to Calcutta to treat them. This is the first time that the family have been filmed for a documentary. Ikramul, 17, and Rehanna, 19, the two eldest progeria children, see this film as their opportunity to tell the world their story before they die.

The 80-Year-Old Children describes the race to solve this scientific riddle and ultimately cure this devastating disease. It also offers a moving testament to human dignity under tragic circumstances.

Conspiracy Files: Mystery at Roswell

Early one morning in July 1947, a rancher stumbles across strange debris littering a pasture on his land, about 120 kilometres outside of Roswell, New Mexico. The material is like nothing he has ever seen before – lightweight, yet incredibly strong. After the crash is reported to authorities, Roswell Army Air Force investigates and issues a sensational press release announcing the capture of a flying disk. The story is reported around the world – but just one day later, it’s retracted when Army officials say the material is nothing more than a simple weather balloon.

To this day, believers insist the strange debris is evidence of one or more alien spaceships that crashed to Earth. And equally resolute, the Air Force firmly denies it. True or not, the incident cements the legendary status of a town called Roswell and becomes a springboard for debates about whether or not we’re alone in the universe.

The ship’s location and itinerary are classified. Details of how the nuclear reactor works are top secret. Many aspects of life on a nuclear aircraft carrier are hush-hush. Holy Warriors Richard the Lionheart & Saladin

Throughout the medieval era, the Holy Land was a fiercely contested battlefield, fought over by huge Muslim and Christian armies, by zealots and assassins. The Third Crusade, spanning five years at the end of the 12th century, was, writes James Reston Jr. in this absorbing account, "Holy War at its most virulent," overseen by two great leaders, the Kurdish sultan Salah ad-Din, or Saladin, and the English king Richard, forevermore known as Lionheart.

Writing with a keen sense of historical detail and drama, Reston traces the complex path by which Saladin and Richard came to face each other on the field of battle. The Crusades, he observes, began "as a measure to redirect the energies of warring European barons from their bloody, local disputes into a 'noble' quest to reclaim the Holy Land from the 'infidel'." Of the five Crusades over 200 years, only the first was successful, to the extent that the Christian armies were able to conquer their objective of Jerusalem. The Third Crusade, as Reston ably shows, was complicated by fierce rivalries among the Christian leaders, by a chain of military disasters that led to the destruction of an invading German army and its emperor, and by the dedication of an opposing Islamic army that shared both a goal and a language.

Saladin, Reston writes, was a brilliant leader and a merciful victor, but capable of costly errors; Richard was extraordinarily skilled at combat, but his lack of resolve cost him many battles, and, ultimately, Jerusalem. Richard returned to Europe, Saladin to Damascus. Neither leader has long to live, and the peace they made would soon be broken. James Reston's splendid book does them both honor while examining a conflict that has never really ended.

This film gives much more than it's title implies. Rick Ray isn't just another seeker wanting answers from the Dalai Lama. He's so intent on not embarrassing himself at his audience with Tibet's spiritual leader that he goes to incredible lengths to prepare himself for this opportunity, such as traveling around India and Tibet to learn all he can about Buddhism and thoroughly researching the 14th Dalai Lama's life story. The result is the best-told (and illustrated) history of the Dalai Lama to date. Weaving in an amazing amount of rare archival footage, Ray gives us an intimate and detailed portrait of "simple monk" who has led anything but a simple life. The loss of his country to the communist Chinese and the struggle of Tibetans in exile are the burden he was born to carry. Turns out the filmmaker didn't need to worry that his meeting with the Dalai Lama would be a flop. His questions are all thoughtful, relevant and universal, just like his entire film.

BBC- Shipwreck Ark Royal

Divers filming a BBC documentary found the wreck of HMS Ark Royal, the famous wartime aircraft carrier.
The aircraft carrier became famous when its torpedo planes hit the German battleship Bismarck during the Second World War, allowing other British warships to close in and sink her.

HMS Ark Royal sank in the Mediterranean, but after that 1941 victory, the vessel herself was torpedoed by the German submarine U-81, 30 miles off Gibraltar. Divers found her lying in 3,500ft of water - where she had been resting for the past 61 years. When she sank she had been returning Hurricane aircraft fighter crews to Malta. One sailor died while the rest of the 1,500 crew were ******d up by other ships as the famous ship went down on November 13, 1941. The ship was was commissioned on 16 November 1938 and took up a name famous in naval history.

The programme was made by producer Mike Rossiter who filmed the raising of Donald Campbell's Bluebird boat, in a BBC1 documentary.

The Gold Rush

On January 24, 1848, James Marshall found gold near the fork of the American and Sacramento Rivers, and unleashed a massive migration from around the world to what had been a forgotten backwater. With head-spinning speed, these gold-seekers created one of the most extraordinary societies in history -- hard-driving, overwhelmingly male, often brutal.

The Gold Rush was a remarkably international event; in short order, gold-seekers from Oregon and the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), Mexico, Chile, England, France, Australia, Ireland, and China were soon knee-deep in water in the diggings. Each found themselves playing the Great California Lottery, in which luck not hard work or honesty, seemed the key to success.

Told though the stories of a small group of diverse characters, Chinese and Chilean, Northerner and Southerner, black and white and tracks the evolution of the Gold Rush from the easy riches of the first few months to the fierce competition for a few good claims. It shows that as the diggings became oppressively crowded, Americans drove foreigners from the mines. And it explores how in the end, the big money was made, not by men with shovels, but by large investments in expensive hydraulic equipment.

Nonetheless, in the hurly burly of the intervening years, the Gold Rush turned California into a place synonymous with risk, riches, and reinvention, a place where the impossible seemed likely.

PBS Special: Carrier (2008)

CARRIER, a 10-part series filmed aboard the USS Nimitz, is a character-driven immersion in the high-stakes world of a nuclear aircraft carrier. The episodes follow a core group of characters as they navigate their jobs, families, faith, patriotism, love, the rites of passage and the war on terror.

Episode 1: “All Hands”
On a bright May morning, 5,000 sailors and Marines bid farewell to their loved ones before the mammoth USS Nimitz pulls out of Coronado, California, and sets a course for Hawaii and beyond. Among the men and women who live and work on board are an airman who describes the ship as a small town; a pilot who considers the ship a powerful instrument of diplomacy; a sailor who questions “why we’re fighting to defend someone else’s freedom when we barely have our own”; a cook who dishes out 15,000 meals a day; and an airman who has just learned that his girlfriend is pregnant.

The Truth about Islam, What the west needs to know

An examination of Islam, violence, and the fate of the non-Muslim world.

Features interviews with noted experts on Islam including Robert Spencer, Serge Trifkovic, Bat Ye'or, Abdullah Al-Araby, and former terrorist Walid Shoebat.

A very well documented documentary. Worth watching many times. Provides the irrefutable proof that Islam itself is the source of terrorism. It also exposes the Muslim double talk, one thing is being said for the benefit of Western public, and another and entirely different thing is preached in the mosques and in the Islamic media

The Dark Side of Pornography

An Ep that is entirely devoted to the taboo subject of pornography.
But this is Disinfo nation and unlike 99% of the thinly diguised TV tittillation, that use the "investigative" terminology merely as an excuse to show as much nudity and sex as they can throw at our screens without incurring the wrath of the censor, this actually IS a fairly serious look at the subject. But be warned some of the language and subject matter will shock the easily offended nontheless. Starting with the revelation of the 4 Billion Dollars this business makes in annual revenue it goes on to show through the words of those directly involved in the making of pornography the extremes it will go to and t he toll it can take on all those involved in it. From the "actresses" to the distributors this is not a pretty tale and "glamour" is the last word that comes to mind. The infamous Rob Black is featured pretty heavily and does not mince his words here. Regardless of how we may personally view the man he has no illusions about his business and engages in no pretense about "art" or "flim" but strips it down to what he sees as it's brutal actuallity.
